Wheel size question....

I've tried having a look through all the wheel posts i can find, forgive me if i missed one :)

I now need some new tyres so think its finally my chance to get some 17" wheels i've been thinking of for a while, my question is, what size tyres do i actually need?

From what i have basically read 205/40/17 is no good as the ratio is 5.99% out, so would this mean ideally i need 215/45/17, think there is 1.42% difference, i've been looking at these but not sure if the rims will fit?

I'm going to put 225/45/17's on mine when I get them on the road. Check this site here about a third of the way down: Wheel & Tyre Bible. You enter your original wheel size and then the size you are thinking of and it shows you how much difference there will be. There are also parts on there which work out how much further the wheel will stick out either side depending on offset, etc. Lots of good information on there and lots of stuff I didn't know, like about the dots on the tyre to inidcate their heaviest point, which you should have opposite the mark indicating the heaviest point on the wheel, etc.

Nice link ta, i've just tried reading all of it and now my brain hurts! Think i've found some more wheels i like (that i can afford) will just ring up tomorrow and make sure they will fit! Been trying to find some Team Dynamic Arnage Black/Machine Polished wheels but the best i can find is about £600 delivered, but still not with the right size tyres, just can' find them any cheaper :(

Ok, as i can't find too many 17" wheels with the correct offset i'm now looking at 17" Fox R3 Black/Silver, what do people think, think they would suit?
Another type is the Aez Xylo, can only find them in high gloss, but ideally i'm after something with silver and black
