Peugeot 97151J (D9 Saloon Boot Lid Spoiler)

Post by highlander »

Hi guys,

Bit of a pickle, this - I bought a rear boot lid spoiler for my car, and I am having problems fitting it.

I didn't buy it new; it was pre-owned, but it had never been fitted to a car, and hadn't been sprayed. Anyway, the packaging had been opened, and the self-adhesive foam strips that you stick to the boot lid itself are missing.

These are the two bits of sticky-backed material that you fold over the edges of the boot lid. The piece of paper that they were stuck to was still in the plastic bag, but the strips seem to have been taken off.

These were made by 3M and are specifically shaped for the car. If anyone knows of another 3M product that I could buy that is the same material but in sheet form that I can cut to shape, then please let me know.

Or would it be a better idea to contact a stealer and ask them if I can order a new consumables kit for the 97151J?

Bit disappointed, really - I'd hoped to have been able to fit the spoiler today. I guess I could do it (as I have the double-sided sticky pads that stick to the edges of the spoiler, and are used for sticking the spoiler onto the boot lid), but not without risking damaging the paintwork on the lip of the boot lid itself.

Kind regards,
Graeme

Well, I'd kinda like to use something as close to the original as possible - I'm not too handy, mechanically or otherwise, except with computers, and I'd hate to screw up with a permanent adhesive.

Should I contact the stealers and see if they can get a new bag of consumables for the 97151J, or is there a similar enough product out there that I can buy and cut to shape? Trouble is, I just don't know what these pieces looked like (transparent plastic, or foam, or ...?)

If anyone else has fitted one of these spoilers, could they have a quick look around and show me something as close to the same material as possible, so that I can buy and cut to shape? I can use the backing paper from the original (which I do still have) as a template.

Kind regards,
Graeme

Sorry to reply to myself, but has anybody fitted one of these at all?

I'm trying to contact some parts suppliers right now to see if I can order the consumables pack separately (i.e. without having to order a spoiler as well), but if someone here has fitted one already, please let me know.

I've still got mine in a box in the back of the shed. I won't get chance till the weekend (pitch black when I get back from work and no street lighting round here) so I'll try to get to it at the weekend and see what there is. From memory, is it the foam bits or the sticky back plastic bits you're missing?

Chief, you're a bloody star! :cheesy:

The part I'm missing is self-adhesive, and is stuck onto 3M-branded paper backing. They are basically long rectangular shapes, which are rounded on the corners of one of the long sides:

Code: Select all

_____
| `.
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| .'
 """""'
They are wrapped around the edge of the boot lid - they stick on to the boot lid directly. The clamps on the spoiler then clamp over this sticky-backed "thing".

I keep calling it a "thing" because I haven't got a clue what material they are made of, or how thick the material is. It might be a kind of foam, or card, or rubber, or bendy plastic. It might be thin, it might be thick. It might be transparent, it might be opaque. I don't even know if it's visible once the spoiler goes on over the top.

If you can tell me what it's most like, then I can buy a sheet of a similar material and cut it to shape (the lines where it was stuck onto the backing paper are still very visible). Then I can fit it at last! :)

Cheers
Graeme

Right, I think I know the part you're on about. From memory, it's about 0.5mm thick and a clear sticky backed plastic. Fairly stiff in construction (i.e. not flimsy like cling film, but fairly sturdy) although it does bend around the boot lid at 180 degrees, so needs to be fairly flexible and well adhesive. There's those bits and a couple of foam bits for the bottom of the spoiler IIRC. I'll get it dug out at the weekend and double check.

Hi,

Did you manage to check this out at the weekend?

Been looking online for self-adhesive transparent plastic sheets, but it's remarkably difficult to find stuff like this (even 3M's website is somewhat lacking).

Cheers

My mate and I fitted the spoiler (just got finished), and it looks really, really good 8)

I bought a roll of thick transparent tape that is designed as a surface protectant for the automotive industry - cost me about £8 - but it's really good.

I then stuck it to the original self-adhesive backing that was supplied with the spoiler kit, and cut it to shape.

Then I just followed the instructions in the manual, and it is perfect! 8)

The car is mucky just now, so I'll take it to the garage and power-wash it tonight on the way home from work, and will get photos of the spoiler and the door sill guards tomorrow (unless it is pissing down with rain ... again)

Was too busy at work to get pics today, and by the time I finish in the afternoons it's pitch dark out at this time of year (North-East Scotland, here).

I'm going to try and stick on my 406oc.co.uk stickers tomorrow, if I get a minute.

The spoiler is the official Peugeot part that was offered as an accessory to new 406 customers 10 years ago when they were in the dealerships and forecourts. It's a nice piece, and you can tell it was designed for this car by the original 406 / facelift design team. It really transforms the back-end of the car, gives it some much-needed pizazz :)

Hi there,

This is the stuff I bought; it's a thick single-sided clear adhesive tape:
http://www.locksonline.com/acatalog/tra ... 3000781116

Wrap it around the edge of the boot lid to protect the paint from being scratched by the metal clamps.

Cheers
