I personally reckon you'd be fine with the width (didn't some of the 16" wheels have 215s as standard?) but you'll need to be careful with the profile. You'd need a 60% profile (215/60R15) to keep a similar rolling circumference as the standard 195/65R15.

Will they fit the wheels though?

Physically fit on the rims? Yes they will. Fit in the arches? Well I run 225/45/17's on the front and 235/45/17's on the rear with only a tiny amount of rub in extreme circumstances (i.e. full steering lock with suspension compressed) and only that is the tyre on the splash guards. So my guess is you would have no adverse affects from fitting say 215/60 tyres as DaiRees pointed out you need to keep the rolling radius the same to keep the speedo reading true(ish).

Mine's got 205/60's as standard - can't see 5mm either side making a lot of odds

They'll be 6Js though, I'm thinking the 195s are on 5 1/2s

i put 205/45/17" on a mk 1 clio with minimal scrubbage and that was only arch liner so i would imagine you would be fine,i also had the same on a 98 306 and the 406 is bigger!!!
