Knocking noise from boot

Hi all,
Would really apprectiate a little advise if possible on a problem thats 'doin my head in' :-)
I have a Peugeot 406 Saloon, 1999-2000 face lift model.
I have a knocking noise coming from what seems like the boot of the car (drivers side) when I go over bumps. I have been to a garage and they have checked the bushes/suspension etc on the rear (both sides) and all appears fine?
I have performed the contortunist act of climbing in the boot to see if anything is loose. I've looked at the spare wheel well and all seems fine there.
I've removed the parcel shelf and tightened the boot arm mounting (which appears to have a little bit of play in it, when compared to the passenger side).
However, I did notice that the gas strut to the boot arm seems to have a lot of play in it, do you think that this could be making the noise when oing over a bump when the boot is closed?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as im at a loss...
Many thanks,
Mark.

It's not the fuel filter knocking about is it? When I bought my car it was held on with a bit of string & knocking about like anything!
It'll be just in front of the rear O/S wheel arch underneath.

Thanks for the reply.
I will take a look :-), the noise sounds like a tinny 'boot' kind of noise if that makes sense. Almost like someone has left a screwdriver in the wheel well...
Very strange, not important as things go, but blummin annoying...
Many thanks,
Mark.

Sorry to sound dumb, but I assume that I will need to remove the wheel arch lining to find it?
Having looked at various sites and comments it appears the Fuel Filter can be a nightmare if I wanted to change it?
Many thanks,
Mark.

Fuel filter?! Surely you mean fuel filler, teamy

Fuel filter is in the engine, not in the boot

May be a D8 thing CJ; the fuel filter is a cannister tied up just in front of the rear o/s wheel arch on both my 406's.

Hi,
Sounds highly plausible that it could be something like that...
2 questions though...
1) Whats a 'D8 Thing'
2) Any chance you could do me a quick pic of where to look and what im looking for shape wise?
Sorry to sound real thick, it wont come as any surprise to know that cars are not my strong point :-)
Many thanks,
Mark.

D8 is Mk1, these have a slatted front grill, D9 is Mk2 with a honeycomb front grill.
I'll take a photo of it tomorrow & stick it up.

No, it's a petrol vs. diesel thing. Diesel filters are MUCH bigger (think large jar of Maxwell House) and live under the bonnet, whereas the petrol ones are smaller than a coke can and usually live under the car to the rear (not just on PSA cars!)

Thanks guys for your help and comments. Very appreciated :-)
I think it might actually be the spacer on the hinge (drivers side) and the gas strut which has a fair bit of play on it. Am replacing both once they arrive in at peugeot dealer!
Failing that I think it could be the lock being a bit worn? Are they prone to wear and can they be adjusted?
Many thanks,
Mark.

Could be the adjuster arm balljoint.
Grab the arm and wiggle it, if the ball joint moves at all it's toast.

Hi Mark - I know that this is an old thread, but if you're listening, did you solve the annoying knocking? My '99 saloon does the same thing, and I had the boot lining out yesterday and gaffa taped anything that could knock to see if it could be eliminated. Not gone yet...
Cheers
Paul
