They look OK to me, but are they legal?

Also, I reckon you should try to source a set of rub strips from a D8 Executive - a little touch of chrome would lift the appearance of your motor (kind of breaks up that sea of black plastic!), and shouldn't break the bank.

Hi Gary,

I'm thinking mine is a bit more vibrate-y that usual and I'm having difficulties getting it into gear when the engine's running. I'm thinking it could be the clutch, so if I do have that replaced, I might have the bottom mount done at the same time.

What I wanted to ask where what were the symptoms of a worn mount and clutch on yours? How did you inspect the mount?

Cheers

hi Jon, sorry to jump in on Gary's thread but a worn bottom mount is pretty easy to diagnose. Lift the bonnet with the engine running and blip the throttle, engine should move a couple of inches or so, ,more than that it's probably the bottom mount gone. Alternatively get under the car and have look at it, easy to spot as the drive shaft goes through the arm that holds it. If nothing obvious is visible get someone to blip the throttle while you're under there and you should see any cracks or perished bits moving around.

Also have a look at the top mounts, I had to change the top drivers side one on my old car, before I did it I couldn't use the rear view as it vibrated so much I couldn't look focus on the mirror. Never felt the vibration through the steering or floor pan tho strangely.

Thanks for the reply gumby.

I tried what you suggested, and the engine really doesn't move very much, maybe an inch at most, and settles back very quickly without oscillating. I think I'll try getting under the car later and having a look around.

The top mount looks perfect to my untrained eye, the rubber is not split anywhere that I can see.

There is some vibration at some road and engine speeds, but perhaps the mounts are not at fault then? Certainly they don't seem to be bad enough to cause the gear change issues I'm having.

With so little engine movement it doesn't sound like a worn out bottom mount to me, but if you do try a new one it is do-able in situ but a right pain in the arse, you have to chop the old one out and squeeze/hammer/swear the new one in (been there, done that) next time I'll be popping the drive shaft out, removing the entire mount assembly and bunging a local garage a few quid to press a new rubber in. Probably best to change the drive shaft seal at the same time for what it costs and change the gear box oil as you've probably spilled some anyway removing the drive shaft.

I believe top mounts are oil filled (mine was anyway) so you'd probably see a bit of fluid if they were cracked/perished.

Out of curiosity what does she idle at? could be a sticking cold start holding the revs a bit high causing vibration while standing, wouldn't affect anything while on the move tho.

Best of luck tracking it down, my new D8 vibrates a bit but the engine runs so sweet I'm not touching anything until I really have to :D

Thanks gumby, no it doesn't seem like engine mounts are an issue but I will climb under the car anyway later and have a poke around. There's definitely no fluid around the top mount.

Mine idles about 825 with the aircon off, which I think is about right?

I know what you mean about not wanting to disturb it. Mine runs really nicely, everything feels very tight for a car that's covered more than 200k miles. The gearshift has been a problem for a while but is gradually getting worse. If it is the clutch dragging or something I'd want to get it sorted before it causes any serious damage to the synchros. Hopefully someone will have some ideas!

jon. get under the car and get hold of the sump on either side and see if the engine moves forward and back.
you wont tell a dud bottom engine mount from top .

when iwas changing my oil i noticed the bottom of the engine was very loose wobbling back and forward..
you can see the rubber mount when you do it. jack car up as high as you can.

also you can tell if driving off in 1st. you can get very bad judder when you release clutch to set off.
