Daily driver...
Daily driver...
Not my daily driver but will be as of August this year
Some may have seen a few pics of the car but I might aswell make a thread!
So, I have a 1998 406 1.9TD. Bough it in April with a few defects
First spotted 2 blown bulbs and a leaking (wrong) backbox
Awaiting the new backbox still
Aerial was missing so I replaced it with the one off a 106 I have here too
Next was a non working window, down to a faulty motor
Then a faulty stop solenoid, I had to rewire it into the ignition loom
The interior was so grubby and smelly, I had to replace it with another one... The smell would knock you out
So I tore almost everything out and binned it!
Now fitted with a GLX interior
After that was the timing belt...
Broke the pulley taking it off had to get another one...
Most recent was the engine steady
Or rather, lack of
And some caliper paint for the rusty calipers
Still plenty to do!

You've put a lot of work into this, great to see Well done!
What else have you got planned for it?
Nice to see another D8, they seem to be getting rarer

Re: Daily driver...
you have been very busy by the looks of it. did you take a pic of the complete interior ?
2004 (04) Volkswagen Bora 1.9 TDi (100)
Re: Daily driver...
Cheers! I plan to get some alloys and coilovers when finances permit tried to wire in the rear elec windows, I'll need more time to figure that out, seems to be a challenge to do, don't want to let those GLX cards go to loss! First though is to get it roadworthy, technically it is tested untill the end of August but it wouldn't pass with those ball joints...jonsowman wrote:You've put a lot of work into this, great to see Well done!

They do indeed seem to be vanishing, I was lucky to find this one close to where I'm from...
Cheers! Haven't a pic of the interior in the car but here's a pic of it in the van...Gary406 wrote:you have been very busy by the looks of it. did you take a pic of the complete interior ?
I'll be getting proper pics in daylight
Re: Daily driver...
Damn, never got those pics... The car is a mess inside!
Still sorting it out mechanically. Priority
The dirt and smell was disgraceful
The old clutch was slipping...
Much better
Needed a new turbo pipe too
And a lot of the engine needed a damn good clean! An example why...
This was actually black...
Not anymore

Well, those other cars, there's a few different ones hiding in some of the pictures... So I'll put up the ones hiding in the pics worthy of putting up!Ares wrote:I admire your will and knowledge, nice job you done.

In one of the first few pics I put up was a green Vectra and a silver Bravo... In some of the others (window fix and interior shot) there's an Iveco van (not mine)
I spoke of a 106, it's a weird one, for off road use...
It doesn't look like that any more!
In one of the car jacked up on the drivers side is my Alfa 166. 2.5 V6 with my E34 lurking behind
In the other pics, there's 2 W126 Mercs (not mine!) ones a 280SE and the others a 500SE
This one is for spares
The one in the garage is being restored, bit by bit
A good few more cars here too... We absolutely love Bravos here!
The 406 is replacing the dark blue Bravo in the 1st pic as my daily driver btw
Re: Daily driver...
The alfa looks nice, what Mpg do you get out of it ?
Bravos are good not many left tho , Did you have the 2.0 2ov bravo?

Re: Daily driver...
The Alfa averages about 22mpg normal driving far handier on longer runs and far thirstier around the town but the sound of the engine makes it all worthwhile It currently sits infront of the house, I don't drive it much anymore. A long term restolozz wrote:The alfa looks nice, what Mpg do you get out of it ?

Sadly over here a 2.0 20v Bravo is nearly unheard of. We have had 7 Bravos, 6 1.2's and a 1.9TD, currently have 4. I originally got the Alfa to stick it's engine into my Bravo but I very quickly fell in love with the Alfa, I couldn't do it!
Re: Daily driver...
Back to the real world...
Painted calliper and bracket
New track rods
Brake bleeding!
Disgraceful...
Next, boot of goodies
Out with the old...
Old loom...
New loom
Front door...
Only way to get it out!
Currently scratching my head trying to get the rear windows to work...
Lastly, drop links
Front almost sorted

Re: Daily driver...

It wouldn't be the first time I've rebuilt a daily hacklozz wrote: excellent stuff mate,

I used Halfords blue calliper paint on the callipers and hammerite black on the brackets. The drums are painted blue, but I think I'll revert them to black...
Replacement day is approaching
It wasn't getting the correct fuel, decided to take out the sender and see what it was like.
This didn't fill me with confidence...
Wasn't as bad as I thought, but still dirty
Now revs up cleaner
New battery too
A nasty niggling problem was a non working headlight... Time to sort that!
This was going to the expansion bottle, a sign of things to come...
....after ripping out the right front corner of the car
But it paid off and after finding the offending grey wire I finally have full lighting power
Grille will be going back on, as soon as I get a radiator for it.... One thing after another!
Re: Daily driver...
Wow.
If this thing doesn't look like it just rolled out of the factory when you're done, I'll be disappointed!

Re: Daily driver...
I do what I can! The painting and dent removal will ensue when I get it tested for hat fresh out of the factory effectBlue406 wrote:Wow.

So more stuff was done...
First, the lock was annoying me. It kept deciding when it wanted to work. So I got another one and binned the old one!
It was clearly messed with before...
Next, new door hinge, for obvious reasons!
Followed by a new rad and thermo pipe
As the old one was, er...
Front card fitted
Trim fitted
Putting on a bracket for the GLX card...
Fitted
And, finally, pics of a somewhat clean interior that need cleaning...!
Still not finished either!
