Daily driver...

Post by dgt »

Not my daily driver but will be as of August this year :)

Some may have seen a few pics of the car but I might aswell make a thread! :cheesy:

So, I have a 1998 406 1.9TD. Bough it in April with a few defects :?
Image

First spotted 2 blown bulbs and a leaking (wrong) backbox
Image
Image

Awaiting the new backbox still
Image

Aerial was missing so I replaced it with the one off a 106 I have here too
Image
Image

Next was a non working window, down to a faulty motor
Image

Then a faulty stop solenoid, I had to rewire it into the ignition loom
Image

The interior was so grubby and smelly, I had to replace it with another one... The smell would knock you out
Image
Image

So I tore almost everything out and binned it!
Image
Image
Image

Now fitted with a GLX interior :D

After that was the timing belt...
Image

Broke the pulley taking it off had to get another one...
Image

Most recent was the engine steady
Image

Or rather, lack of
Image

And some caliper paint for the rusty calipers
Image

Still plenty to do! :P

You've put a lot of work into this, great to see :) Well done!

What else have you got planned for it?

Nice to see another D8, they seem to be getting rarer :(

Cheers! I plan to get some alloys and coilovers when finances permit :)tried to wire in the rear elec windows, I'll need more time to figure that out, seems to be a challenge to do, don't want to let those GLX cards go to loss! First though is to get it roadworthy, technically it is tested untill the end of August but it wouldn't pass with those ball joints...

They do indeed seem to be vanishing, I was lucky to find this one close to where I'm from...

Cheers! Haven't a pic of the interior in the car but here's a pic of it in the van...

I'll be getting proper pics in daylight :)

Damn, never got those pics... The car is a mess inside!

Still sorting it out mechanically. Priority
Image

The dirt and smell was disgraceful
Image
Image
Image

The old clutch was slipping...
Image

Much better :)
Image

Needed a new turbo pipe too
Image

And a lot of the engine needed a damn good clean! An example why...
Image

This was actually black...
Image

Not anymore :cheesy:

Well, those other cars, there's a few different ones hiding in some of the pictures... So I'll put up the ones hiding in the pics worthy of putting up!

In one of the first few pics I put up was a green Vectra and a silver Bravo... In some of the others (window fix and interior shot) there's an Iveco van (not mine)

I spoke of a 106, it's a weird one, for off road use...
Image
Image
It doesn't look like that any more!

In one of the car jacked up on the drivers side is my Alfa 166. 2.5 V6 with my E34 lurking behind :D
Image
Image

In the other pics, there's 2 W126 Mercs (not mine!) ones a 280SE and the others a 500SE
This one is for spares
Image
Image
The one in the garage is being restored, bit by bit
Image
Image
Image

A good few more cars here too... We absolutely love Bravos here!

The 406 is replacing the dark blue Bravo in the 1st pic as my daily driver btw :)

The Alfa averages about 22mpg normal driving  far handier on longer runs and far thirstier around the town  but the sound of the engine makes it all worthwhile :cheesy: It currently sits infront of the house, I don't drive it much anymore. A long term resto :)

Sadly over here a 2.0 20v Bravo is nearly unheard of. We have had 7 Bravos, 6 1.2's and a 1.9TD, currently have 4. I originally got the Alfa to stick it's engine into my Bravo but I very quickly fell in love with the Alfa, I couldn't do it!

It wouldn't be the first time I've rebuilt a daily hack :cheesy:

I used Halfords blue calliper paint on the callipers and hammerite black on the brackets. The drums are painted blue, but I think I'll revert them to black...

Replacement day is approaching :D

It wasn't getting the correct fuel, decided to take out the sender and see what it was like.

This didn't fill me with confidence...
Image

Wasn't as bad as I thought, but still dirty
Image

Now revs up cleaner :cheesy:

New battery too
Image

A nasty niggling problem was a non working headlight... Time to sort that!
Image

This was going to the expansion bottle, a sign of things to come...
Image

....after ripping out the right front corner of the car
Image

But it paid off and after finding the offending grey wire I finally have full lighting power :cheesy:
Image

Grille will be going back on, as soon as I get a radiator for it.... One thing after another!

Wow.
If this thing doesn't look like it just rolled out of the factory when you're done, I'll be disappointed!

I do what I can! The painting and dent removal will ensue when I get it tested for hat fresh out of the factory effect :)

So more stuff was done...

First, the lock was annoying me. It kept deciding when it wanted to work. So I got another one and binned the old one!
Image

It was clearly messed with before...
Image

Next, new door hinge, for obvious reasons!
Image

Followed by a new rad and thermo pipe
Image

As the old one was, er...
Image

Front card fitted
Image

Trim fitted
Image

Putting on a bracket for the GLX card...
Image

Fitted :cheesy:
Image

And, finally, pics of a somewhat clean interior that need cleaning...!
Image
Image

Still not finished either! :P
