my 406 1.8 16 v
ok here is my 406 bear with me its not finished by a long shot
ok as you can see by the last pic NO ALLOYS YET LONG STORY i got some but the buggers did not fit the front ones where rubbing on my front calipers how pissed off was i but they where only temp wheels as they are a bit scuffed but was 17" multi spoke wheels which did look nice so now i have to sell them the wheels are pictured last
any way it is chipped and has a induction kit on it and is now lowered 55mm but sitting on origanal wheels not for long beleive me
i am keeping the colour as i like the diablo red

oh and with the new spoiler which i like on it dont care what other peolpe think its what i wanted
the wheels that did not fit

looking for £150 worth it just for the tyres

What does the rear spoiler do? I have seen them on touring cars at last years BTCC but wondered what they do, I assume it is something to do with cornering or stability but not sure exactly.
Also, if you have springs fitted which are 55mm lower, don't you need to change the dampers and drop links for shorter items, and have the cars geometry set up?
How do you get on with the chip fitted, these tend to make the car run rich all the time, do you remove it for the MOT test? I suppose the induction kit and free flow exhaust counteract the rich running with an increased air flow to suit the fueling?

Set up properly, it reduces rear end lift at speed to make the car more stable, less lift = more grip. Some cars like the Skyline and Escort Cosworth are set up to actually create downforce at speed, meaning you can generate more cornering grip at higher speeds. A Formula 1 car actually produces so much downforce that at over 100mph you could drive it on the ceiling.Welton wrote:What does the rear spoiler do? Forgive my ignorance here, but if a road car was designed to have a large downforce spoiler on the boot should this not be complementary to other aerodynamic features of the car so that it works with them, as a package? Afterall if you found you were generating alot of downforce on the back of, say, a 406 this could be like having a loaded boot, which in my experience makes the front go light.

Agreed, hence the need for a balanced approach to aerodynamics. Generally if you want to increase front end downforce you fit a lower front apron and a splitter, which is a flat plate designed to seperate the airflow above and below the car cleanly. The lower apron makes more air flow over the car than under it, reducing the lift effects at speed. Then you would usually compliment this effect by using a rear spoiler with a more pronounced angle of attack, as just altering one end of the car and not the other could produce instability. It is a proven effect, my RS Turbo used to suffer from vague steering at speeds exceeding 140mph. Fitting a Laguna splitter reduced the ground effect height by about two or three inches, diverting more air over the car, making the front end much less vague at speed.
Honestly? Hardly any effect at all. Aerodynamics don't affect a car very much until speeds of about 80mph are reached, so unless you're regularly ragging the arse off it at silly speeds there's very little point other than for cosmetic reasons.mjb wrote: But how would it actually affect a FWD car knocking out not much more than 100bhp?

Yes, I have seen this fitted to a Citroen Saxo, a local lad was showing me. He said......''dat fing meks da car ded fast lyke a formerla wun carz''..... Looking smart. I'll be honest, the spoiler's not my cup of tea, but if we were all the same, then it'd be a boring place. Alloys will really set that car off though, can't wait for the new pics.

Looking good! not a fan of the spoiler but thats what modifying is all about different tastes you probably wouldn't like mine but thats fair enough
Where you get the springs? and do you reckon u'd get any problems with rubbing once you've fitted bigger alloys?
I have mine down 35/40mm with 18's fitted it seems to rub on the inside of the rear right wheel arch no problems with the front rubbing just the back! especailly when some chunky buggas are in the back
