Beko1987's Winter Beater of Distinction!

Hi! This seems like a good place to start a meandering progress thread on my new 406! Not much has happened and not much will happen TBH as I seem to have bought a car that's had a recent cambelt and waterpump 18,000/2 years ago and full service 3000 miles ago...

The initial pictures are in my intro thread, so I won't re-post those, but will start from what I did when I got home from work, which is sort out the loud drone coming from the vanity light. Having owned late 90's PSA chod before, I know the unmistakable sound of a clagged up climate control fan...

So when I got home from work, I grabbed a torx driver and bought it all indoors

This looks promising...

Delightful. Handily the fan unit doesnt pull right out short of de-soldering the sensor, but it does pull out enough to remove the fan and cotton bud the crap from inside of the housing

Whilst I had them all in I cleaned the contacts, lenses and bulbs from the interior lights

Washed the fan

And once refitted to the car, the fan is silent once more, and the lights MUCH brighter than they were!

Image

Will be interesting to see if the auto setting works any better, it was blowing cold air out at 23 degrees with the window open a crack on the way home!

I also tested the boot, loads of room, infact too much room, Henry was rolling about all over the place

Image

So what's next on the to-do list?

Image

Handbrake. Will start at the centre console as the lever itself sounds like it's binding on something, then adjust the drums as the previous owner from last (it's complicated, it's a known car on Autoshite) says it's had recent shoes and discs and needs adjusting. I can also find the metal clip for the small interior light that pinged down into the console area...

Fix the indicator stalk, might order the part tonight and print the how to guide out

Fit my headunit when the adapter kit arrives

I splashed out £40 on a fair service kit for it, but it was done 3k ago... So I'll have a look at the air and cabin filters just in case, then ferret the oil and filter away in the shed for spring time, it'll e about 10k by then so will be due.

Do something about the drivers door seal that does what it likes (tape it on for the short term)

Fiddle with the headlights

Properly fit the battery box lid as it's loose and rattles

Maybe give it a vacuum and a wash!

Hi Beko, I've read loads of your postings on the AS forum, nice to see you on here, I'm a long-term member and hang around for the crack or try to offer words of wisdom from years of being a member.

Unfortunately the 406 ownership is dwindling fast so the forum's a bit quiet, this is a real shame as the 406 is a real unsung hero of the car world; it looks after its occupants and gets them where they need to be without any fuss and demands little in return.

You did a good job with that pesky little fan there! they used to stop working completely until provoked/cleaned not sure why that wouldn't burn out the motor but they never seemed to..

Look forward to more updates from you 8)

Thanks! I always register for the marque specific forums, mainly due to the masses of knowledge, and post because forum etiquette says it's the thing to do! (I was on the renault forum when I had the laguna's, but it was utter crap so I didn't stay there!)

Got a few hours on Sunday, so in I imagine the pissing rain I want to adjust the handbrake, eye up and change the air filter, fettle the battery and fit my headunit. Or try to at least...

I too join the relevant forums for whichever car I own..
I tried to join a Meriva club but never got a confirmation email...
Still waiting for a reply from a Skoda forum, it's been 6 years now.
It certainly makes you appreciate this one.

You wanna try the Volvo Forum, after 9 years of regular postings and (what I considered) being quite helpful I feel like they're just beginning to like me

Although I don't go into 'their' Lounge Section; that's akin to walking into a quiet village pub holding a severed head....
