Just a little application of WD40 and the last bit of a roll of Bounty (why does no other kitchen roll come close to the awesomeness of Bounty?) and in 30 minutes you can go from this:

I might even take it to the carwash this afternoon! It's SO much nicer than the tubby's engine bay - everything has loads more room! Well, almost everything. I'm not going to even think about attempting a cambelt change myself!

Oops. Just saw I missed the throttle cable and the front of the air filter box!

Now what was that stuff that'll clean up the manky Bluey Bling?

Very good m, if I may be so bold as to suggest a sparing application of Bumper Care gelly (AuoGlym) on the hoses and black plastics

I've spotted 2 things which surprised me:

• The blade-type winscreen wipers
  The double bonnet latch system

The blade-type winscreen wipers

Yup, my tubby went to the scrappers without blades - there was no way I was leaving those beauties behind! They've lasted me around 50,000 miles and they're still performing well. Unfortunately I need to get the drivers side wiper arm off the new car and get some grease inside because there isn't enough downward pressure in the centre (the 'aero' blades sit a LOT lower)

D9s only have one in the middle? The plastic latch in the middle of D8s really doesn't do anything as I've unfortunately discovered twice now

Wow - I've really over used that pic haven't I?

I often found that the D8 bonnet would remain unlatched on one side, and then some ham-fisted donkey would push the other side down and dent it. I'd like to think that's why they went back to single latch on the D9 (although of course we all know it was really a "cost saving initiative" ).

As for the aero wipers, you could just bend the arms slightly to increase the downward pressure

What a tool! Why didn't I think of that? I was even looking up the cost of a new arm on servicebox (don't go there - just don't!)

That engine bay is sooo clean mjb! You just need the battery cover now!
I'd be embarrassed to show the state of mine on here, the engine bay is a mass of oil spray, antifreeze and power steering fluid leaks

I have the battery cover in the boot, it's just too small for that massive battery! After my stereo and inverter caused my tubby to need a bump-start after 10 minutes, I'll gladly sacrifice the cover for extra power any day!

Mine's an oily mess under the engine cover. I'm going to get my hands on a set of new screws (the ones on it look scarily rusty), take it off, and get cleaning up under there. I've come to realise a clean engine bay makes it a lot easier to spot the source of leaking fluids, as well as making it much easier and more importantly much more enjoyable to work in there!

Oh, and I'm going to get some degreaser and a toothbrush on the intake manifold and that metal cover the other side of the plastic cover. Just for vanity

You're right there, to be honest I'm being a lazy bastard
It's got to be done though, especially now I've cured the coolant leak & put a new clip on the power steering hose! Two leaks down, one to go! Apart from which my neighbours are getting pissed off at the oil puddle left under the car wherever I park it

Next time they complain you should see how they feel about a blood puddle.
