Not too sure on the teeth, will require further investigation stripping the rest of the cam covers off. A job for the weekend as long as it's dry.

Any tips for getting to the 10mm top cam cover bolt on the 406? Am I best off removing the top engine mount for better access?

If you manage to get it off with relative ease please let me know, I'd like to inspect my belt but don't really fancy messing around with engine mounts! :)

The new head arrived today complete with 10 rocker arms and 12 of the round things that sit on top of the valve (the name escapes me atm). 5 of the arms have a single dot on the underside, and 5 of them have 2 dots, so I just need to get the cam out and see which ones need replacing. All systems go this weekend then unless the weather (or something else) puts an end to all the play.

Today I have been mostly stripping down the engine and making a start on putting it back together again. Timing belt is removed and the cause of the damage was as I suspected. Bits of fan belt got into the timing belt cover and caused the belt to jump. The timing belt is also damaged with a few of the teeth almost being ripped off. :roll:

Am I right in thinking that the engine can only be locked in one position? With the belt having jumped, the timing holes weren't in place, so I obviously locked the flywheel first, then removed the belt then turned the fuel pump pulley and locked that and then once the cam was off and I could turn it I locked the cam in position too. I'm assuming that everything will be in the right places now for when the new belt goes on?

Got the cam off and swapped the rockers over, cam cover tightened back down, rocker cover and inlet manifold back on.

Hopefully, now it's just a case of fitting timing belt, fan belt (with replacement pulleys to prevent same happening again), engine mount, airbox, ECU box and strut brace back on and fingers crossed it'll work again! That's next weekend taken care of then (weather permitting)! Pics to follow once the missus is back and she can tell me where she's hidden the camera. :D

I don't know the answer on timing, but hopefully jasper will be along shortly.....

Just wondering, mostly for my own interest, is it possible to do a compression test on a diesel?

Aslong as it's all locked when you fit the new cambelt you cannot go wrong :)

Timing belt kit and water pump purchased from the bay of E for the princely sum of £66 delivered, so waiting on that coming and then reassembly time. Will be a few weeks yet as we're hoping to get cracking on lining the chimney stack and switching the stoves. :D

£96 for the replacement head (only 4 rockers required), new timing belt kit and water pump. That's it so far, but it will need a replacement pulley/tensioner and aux belt (although I need to check the ones I've got spare to see if they're the right size). Say another £30 or £40 there and fingers crossed that'll be it fixed! Still no guarantees that I haven't knackered the valves as I haven't had the head off. Really, the fix has cost less than £150 I reckon, and I've still got the spare head so if something else goes wrong I've at least got some spare parts!

But I may aswell service it at the same time, so another £20-25 for the oil, oil filter and fuel filter, and I'll take the K&N panel out and clean it. I've done the glow plugs with ones I've had for a while and I've also blocked off the EGR pipe to the inlet manifold with a 2p piece. So much easier doing the glow plugs with half the engine missing! :lol:

It will need a few bits and pieces for the MOT, but no more than £100 at the prices I'll pay for stuff. Needs a windscreen too from the crack that developed late on last year, but that'll be an insurance job once I've swapped the insurance over.

Havent been on in while, but im happy to return and see this car hasnt been stripped and shipped throughout the country! :P

Best of luck getting this going again! you really should convert to a bosch pump now that you have it stripped down.

If it works when I put it all back together, then Bosch and veg oil are the next port of call! Still waiting on timing belt kit and water pump. :roll: That said, I've been busy this weekend lining the chimney stack, removing the old fire and laying a new concrete base for the hearth. Will need to get the new stove into place next weekend and tidy up a few bits and pieces, and then hopefully it'll be all systems go on the 406.

Glad to see you're back on here with a new 406 too fella! I see you've decided to use springs on the rear this time around! :supafrisk:
