Have a read up about the bottom pulley on here Dave; it's a favourite to disintegrate and throw off the aux belt, fouling the the timing belt! If you don't know when it was last changed it would be worth checking out. The guys that own HDi's will have all the low downs for you :)

I think the most important job for this car is to get rid of that lump of red nastiness on the tailgate

£60 though... wow...

Dave you should also consider the cambelt - it's GOT to be overdue a change on a £60 car!!! Also, read up on the middle seat belt and make sure it's always got plenty of slack. A few of us have had issues with the reel sticking when the seat's been dropped. Mine needed cutting :(
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Crikey, if you brim the fuel tank with Diesel you'd write the car off

Bottom pulley wise, look for a brown-ish dust down there but the key clue is a *really* nasty clanking noise which rises and falls with the revs. Cambelt wise - every 96,000 but if you're on a tight budget you could always "inspect" the belt for signs of wear for now, sounds naff but these engines aren't too harsh on the belts really. Although over-stretching cambelt changes is taking a risk I have to say.
