URGENT - rear tyre wear inside

Post by 406IT »

Hi All
I have noticed a big problem on the rear tyres - both inside of the rear tyres are bald !!the outside is like new - I calles ATS to see if they could do laser alignment but they said its main dealer only - Anyone had the same problem and anyone know anywhere except main dealer where this can be done or can it be done DIY - the guy from ATS said it could be camber aswell as tracking - can anyone help with the setup?

Just called Peugeot in cardiff and they said they dont do alignment on the rear and that there is no adjustment on the rear - he said its a fixed bar !!!! - Now i'm confused !! HELP please!

There is adjustment on the back but it's more likely to be worn bushes.

Another thing to check; make sure the wheel arch liner isn't fouling the tyre, I've just sorted the exact same problem. If it is the case heat it up with a hot air gun so that you can set it back in the correct position.

well - after searching previous posts - i found a place in cardiff, A&A tyres which someone posted a good review of on here before - I called them and took it there this morning - £58.75 later and all four wheels altered its better - The rear tracking was way out - and they couldnt adjust it enough - they asked me if it has had a bump - I know it has never been knocked as we had the car in the family from NEW - anyway they have adjusted all 4 wheel so they souldnt wear out the tyres now - having 2 new rear tyres fitted on Monday - so hopefully this will solve the tyre wear - I have no idea why its only started to wear this time as the adjustment was still as per the day it left the factory - its never been changed - The modern laser tracking stuff is amazing - i got speaking to the guy who owned the place and 20 grand for the ramp and the laser stuff - It shows the car in 3D modelling with cameras and lasers - and takes into account any wear in the rims of the wheels to get correct alignment - it was very cleaver stuff - much more accurate then the laser stuff which rests on the wheels -

Glad you got it sorted M8, yeah Rear links arms are adjustable on the inner joint where their bolt has an eccentric shoulder :)

The joints may have started to suffer some wear and allowed the rear wheels to start to toe out.

Saying that, I did knock my rear tracking out of alignment once in the past by drifting into a kerb in the snow (oops).

You may possibly need a new rear link arm or 2 at the next MOT, together with re-aligning. Not too bad tho, that is about the only part that I have ever had any of my 406's fail an MOT on ! :)

Great old 406's hey :)

Apologies for bumping an old thread but it made sense rather than starting a new one!

Some useful information here. I've got a 2002 HDi Estate, which i bought earlier this year. Checked it over at the time of purchase and it seemed to have reasonable tyre tread on the rears (3-4mm fairly evenly).

I've done 4000 miles since and haven't checked the wear at all during that time  Backed it out of the drive in the snow yesterday and noticed that when i walked back to the house, the tracks i'd left in the snow were smooth one side, but had treadmarks the other... Had a proper look and both rears are fine on the outside edges, but about 60-70% of the tyre is slick (inside half) and the very inside edge is showing signs of the canvas poking through!

Both rears have done this the same. Got it to a tyre shop round the corner and now have two new tyres. Got them to check the alignment (usual laser tracking) and it wasn't that far out. So i guess the bushes are shot?

Whats the likely cost of the parts and time to replace them? Cars booked for service/cambelt in Jan so i can get this sorted too - just hoping it'll not be too expensive just after Chrimbo time!

Any other things it could be?!
