the springs on 406s are common for snappin,, especially in the winter months,

both mine went overnight parked up last winter, luckely no other damage was caused but usually it busts the cv boots and can damage the brake pipes

the only main tip i have for you is

be very very carefull with the compressors // a friend of mine knocked 2 of his teeth out 2 years ago changing springs with compressors ,
it twanged off and hit him in his mouth ,

always keep your face well back as far as you can

and to be honest it is very very hard changing 406 springs with compressors, they are quite large springs

best left to a professional in my opinion

If you can borrow a hydraulic spring compressor I highly recommend it
Made the job a pleasure on mine, and cut the time down considerably, plus is SO much safer

Thought 'BERU' glowplugs were supposed to be the dogs for the old XUD 1.9 TD. tempted to do my plugs (no problems just age of car)

I just came back from a week's holiday over Christmas last night and had left my 406 HDI 90 Estate in the airport car lark.

I set off out of the car park late in the evening and very shortly heard a clunking/rubbing sound and the car ground to a halt.

Called out the AA and he took of the nearside front wheel, to reveal a right dogs-breakfast. The spring totally destroyed etc, as well at the drive shaft boot.

Of all the times this could have happened - 1st day back at work today etc.

Being 200 miles from home and not having full relay cover :( the AA guy towed my sorry vehicle to a local garage. I spoke to the garage owner 1st thing this morning and explained why the was a strange vehicle in his car park.

He's going to get it sorted this week and I asked him to replace both sides while he's at it.

Assuming this guy is reasonable, what might I expect to pay for this job ? Unfortunately he knows very well that I can't really take it elsewhere, as I'm now at the other end of the country in a hire car.

Oh, and get this. I had to fork out for a hotel last night, as I couldn't get the family home. We got a hire car this morning and having driven about 3 miles, a taxi rammed me from behind, while I was stopped at a red light. Back end of hire car destroyed; back to hire car company with tail between legs.

I look forward to consigning the last 24 hours to history.

Happy new year all.

well at least you shall look forward to a whip lash claim mate after all that bad luck

the springs job should be about £100 per side maximum maybe a bit less (but take into account the broken cv boot)

did you go to the hospital after you got hit from behind ? make sure you go so its recorded for your claim mate

sure whiplash pays £2000 these days (per person)
