clunking

i have a clunking noise coming from nearside front wheel area. Any ideas? Its only when i go over bumps although the steering wheel is pulling towards it when im on a straight road. Thankyou

I was going to say chocolate drop links but I'm not sure about the pulling towards it bit, track rod end?

the 2 could well be related to different things.

knocking is gonna be droplink. bottom ball join or as ste says track rod end. (droplink is favourite)

the pulling is probably a tyre problem or the trackin needs doing . whens the last time the tracking was done ?

with roads being so bad today i have my tracking checked every 6 months. my estate has stupid speed bumps.

also check your tyre pressure because if all tyres are not the same that also can cause pulling ..

you should see the roads over here, (isle of wight) rediculous. I have droplinks to put on. I will get the tracking checked. My car has no history. The previous owner couldnt even send of the log book. Thanks for the help

I bet it's the pear shaped rubber mount that the top engine mount sits over, it screws into the top of the wheel arch area on the LH side & likes to work its way loose over time.
Where abouts in the IOW do you live? I'll hopefully be over that way in May for a bike rally down at Brighstone!

oh right. Il have a look. Im in West wight. Lovely in summer, dead in the winter though.

droplinks usually are hard to get off. the nuts weld them selfs onto the bolt.

i dont even try to remove them anymore with sockets / spanners

i always get my grinder out 1st. best way and quickest. no messing

I did drop links and ball joints on mine to fix the knocking, it reduced it but didn't cure it. New wishbones going on at the weekend due to worn bushes and hopefully that should do the trick. Pop the covers off the top of the shocks and rock the wheels back and forth, if there is movement in the tops chances are the bushes are on the way out allowing too much play in the legs.
My steering feels vague at the minute due to it which might explain the pulling if one side is tight and the other loose. Mine feels like oversteer

I spoke to a guy who used to work at the dealers, and he told me they don't bother either trying to undo them, and they also grind them off and fit a new nut and bolt
So when I needed to do a horizontal link on the nearside rear, that's what we did

ye its the best way. no point waistin your energy trying to undo then getting annoyed when you see all the ball joint spinning as well

that reminds me i must order my droplinks now. changing the discs and pads very soon so may as well do them while i'm there.

they havnt gone but will do it anyway why wheel is off
