Skimming Break Disks

Hi Guys,

I'm looking at skimming my breaks disks partly for a bit of fun, cheaper, and as a bonus more Eco friendly!

Is there any chance you could adsise on in the minimum disk width and a approximate rate of wear? Basically working out if its worth bothering with.

406 - 2.0 HDi - 2001 (Y) - Saloon.

Totally new to this game, looking for any further advice also tips/tricks, hoping to give it a go on Saturday, purchased new pads.

Much much will the skimming cost you? How much will new discs cost you?

Hmmm, it's a bit old fashioned to be fair and can only be done if the discs are not already wearing thin (which they probably are). As far as the minimum thickness goes I don't know the figure but it is normally stamped on the disc hub (unless someone here can tell you more).

The risk is that you take them down in thickness enough to make them smooth and even but risk cooking them too easily

I think generally discs are cheap enough these days to replace so skimming is less popular.

If you have access to a machine to do it at little cost it's probably worth a go but watch the thickness!

Can do it for free, it will be a little bit of a hastle considering I'm not going to be able to go anywhere once the disks are removed! Especially if I mess the job up!

For replacement, cheap quality disks its £50 (for the pair).

Not really doing it as a cost saving exercise, just a bit of fun, but don't want to compromise safety, and secondly I'm not bothered for having to do the job again in a few months as the disks are too thin.

As I implied before I'm not sure to what extent the disks have worn. The MOT advised 'uneven wearing', and breaking at highspeed (70 mph +) makes the steering wheel judder a bit, nothing too drastic.

Plan is to Whip off the wheels tomorrow, see what I can see.

Is there anything I should be looking for?

Mate just swap 'em, you should be able to pick up mintex discs and pads for about £60 off ebay. The minimum thickness will be stamped on the disc somewhere, it always amazes me how much they wear, skimming a worn vented disc will almost certainly put it below the minimum thickness.
