Hydraulic Jack?

Hydraulic Jack?
Hi all, my scissor jack has fallen to pieces and i was thinking of getting a bottle hydraulic jack. Would this be ok for my 1.9L 406? It seems to have a round 'saddle' with notches in it. In use, would It just slot into the same part of the car as the previous jack did ?
thanks for any help.

Re: Hydraulic Jack?
Might be easier liberating one from a scrappy - I can't imagine they'd want much for it.
(Maybe one of the serial 406-ers has a spare)?

As above mentioned/You might be best just getting another (standard -jack) Breakers yard /ebay perhaps,
Itried a bottle jack on My old 406 it wouidnt lift it high-enough to get the wheel off,

Re: Hydraulic Jack?
When you're at the breakers rummage through the boot of the biggest heaviest car they have, always better to over do the weight rating on a jack then the other way round.
As far as I'm aware scissor jacks are a standard fit, at least I've never seen one that isn't.

Re: Hydraulic Jack?
when my jack collapsed when jacking my car up i bought one of these ones
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-TON-SCISSOR ... 3f00db369b
trouble is with the 406 standard jack i think it had plastic threads were it screwed . mine just collapsed when i was jacking car up one day. good job i wasnt under it
so in the future i will never ever use a standard 406 again.
the one in the link is all metal threads so should be much better. it fits above the spare wheel ok but not as perfect as a standard one ...

Re: Hydraulic Jack?
in response to gary's post, i never work under a car on a scissor jack, i get the ramps out for that. Even changing a wheel i tend to put the spare under the sill while i'm getting the wheel off.

Thanks for all the replies - I went for the scissor jack from TCUK (Garys link). It was the plastic threads that gave way on mine also.

Re: Hydraulic Jack?
Idont use standard jacks unless its a Nissan one,
there solid and dont colapse
the ones in the 406s are only any good for a quick wheel change side of road puncture jobbie,
as of the nissan ones ive used them when ive changed clutches and theyve remained strong even after alot of weight /strain as been on them.

Re: Hydraulic Jack?
I agree that they are great to use and small enough to "carry around" in the car, but remember that with any hydraulic jack, you're relying on nothing more than an oil seal to hold the car up - so always carry something solid like a wooden block or similar to support the car if you intend putting any of your head/body/small furry animals underneath it...midsdaz wrote:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Tonne-Hydra ... 1649wt_697

Ye I agree but I had that jack for 3 years and it's never failed and I've done clutches brakes alsorts with out any blocks or axle stands

Re: Hydraulic Jack?
I really can't stress enough how vital it is to support any vehicle with axle stands or other strong support that will support the weight of the vehicle you are planning to work on.
My Brother in Law was killed when his Land Rover fell on him as his jack collapsed....he got careless not using axle stands working on his own car.....he was a qualified mechanic and should have known better....complacency can be a terrible thing!!
He was 26 years old with 2 young boys.
ALWAYS support your vehicle when you jack it up!!!
