Changing near side track rod.

Post by cox377 »

Hello guys,

My motor has just failed on a near side track rod. I'm going to change the rod and end at the same time to safe the faff of getting end off.

Haynes manual states I need a special tool to get the track rod off, is this right?

As far as I see it, it's a case of removing the gatter, removing the rod end from the hub & turning the track rod out the track?

Is this an ass of a job or normally okay?

Thanks in advance

You will find that it's far easier and cheaper to change the track rod end alone.

To change the track rod as well, you'll need a special tool, it won't just unscrew, you need to grasp the knuckle joint

e.g. http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/14089409 ... =63&ff19=0

I had the inner track rod changed by the main dealer cost £92 but included tracking as well

£95 is the price I've been quoted by the local garage to do it inc tracking.

It's the track rod that it's actually failed on, I was going to change the end whilst I was there.

Ahh, so the track rod will just turn on the knuckle as it's the knuckle that needs changing out.

Oh sorry, I now understand that you want to change the inner tie rod.

If you consider that 4 wheel laser tracking is approx £50 and the cost of the special tool, and the inner tie rod, I'd go with the garage doing it.

You don't need a special tool. To remove inner tie rods
I use stilsons or a exhaust clamp :supafrisk:

How about when you are getting the new track rod in, won't I damage the knuckle when tightening?

Thanks in advance

There solid metal.

Are we talking about the inner track here. :?:
There's no knuckle on the inner
Its just solid with 2 slots iirc .

Put a rag round it and tighten with stilsons

Hello guys, if they're solid metal, what actually wears on them?

Do anyone have a close up picture of one so I know what I'm looking at?

Thanks in advance

Its not a joint.
it works more like a bearing..

what iwas trying to say was the part that you tighten is solid metal.
its just round with two notches on it.
