Overhauled the rear brakes.
So nearly three weeks ago I jumped in to go to work, reversed of the drive as normal until I went to go forward, The rear brakes were locked solid ,
Draged her arse back onto the drive I went to work on my bike .
When I got home I jacked her up & wipped the wheels off O.M.G what a mess , Time for a rebuild me thinks

If you don't mind me saying, the first set of pics show a shocking lack of maintenance....

Seems to be a common problem with these cars, just done mine including cables, but must admit I'm a little jealous as I didn't have enough time to paint my shields :-[ nice job there.

Re: Overhauled the rear brakes.
I reckon there's a trend to use too big a brake on cars these days just let the ABS/TC sort it out (it does seem daft to use the same brake across the range so you have the same set up as a V6) so, unless you hoon around like a nutter they just don't get hot enough to vaporise any water/condensation and end up in a worse state than, umm, the US.

I know Mark , I've only had the car for four months & I knocked the price down partly due to the state of the rear brakes.markw wrote:If you don't mind me saying, the first set of pics show a shocking lack of maintenance....

Re: Overhauled the rear brakes.
oldskool, I think the main common prob here is down to a lack of routeen maintinance , I read about lot's of people complaining that 406 hand brakes are week but mine is now unmoveable on four click's & I have yet to bed the shoes in to the drum's .oldskoolskool wrote:Seems to be a common problem with these cars, just done mine including cables, but must admit I'm a little jealous as I didn't have enough time to paint my shields :-[ nice job there.

The only reason for painting the backplates is if you look carefully in one of the pic's you might notice that it has some holes in it , & on finding out that it would cost me in the region of £250 for two back plates & two wheel bearing / hub assembly's.
I descided to try & make mine last a little longer, lot's of wire wheeling / grinding / rust treatment / fibreglass / highstrength enamell on the disc side & hamerite on the back & the result's you can see in the pic's, hopefully should last for at least a couple more years .
Not to mention the time spent refurbing the rear calipers, they have had a simler treatment strip / unseize / clean off heavy corrosion / rust treatment / paint silver/grey enamell / new slider & seal kit ect, ect:

Re: Overhauled the rear brakes.
Where did you get the refurb kit for the calipers, mine hadn't seized but I couldn't slide the piston back when fitting new disc's/pad's due to bad corrosion. After pricing up new parts I found it cheaper to buy refurbished calipers.

Re: Overhauled the rear brakes.
Ebay, £14.95 inc p&p but was just for the slider pin's & the seal's inc dust seal's, my one saving grace was my caliper piston's were in good shape .
Just a bit corroided between the dust seal & the back of the pad ( where there exposed ) .

Re: Overhauled the rear brakes.
I counter that as long as your brakes can fit inside your wheels, there is no such thing as too big a brake, you want as much braking ability and heat absorption as possible, in the unlikely event that you need to do several hard stops in succession. You can never have brakes that are too powerful, as long as they're set up to let you modulate braking force correctly. There is such a thing as over-boosted brakes, but that's mostly because it's an easy way to make brakes feel more powerful and secure. They're so much harder to modulate and make it harder to stop the car softly instead of jerking to a halt. So big beefy hardware, big rotors and big multiple piston calipers? Yes please. Artificially over-boosted brakes? No thanks.steve_earwig wrote:I reckon there's a trend to use too big a brake on cars these days just let the ABS/TC sort it out (it does seem daft to use the same brake across the range so you have the same set up as a V6) so, unless you hoon around like a nutter they just don't get hot enough to vaporise any water/condensation and end up in a worse state than, umm, the US.
The reason they put the same brakes from the V6 on the other models is to save money. Put the brakes you know can handle a V6 on the 4-cylinders and diesels, and you only have to certify one braking system and you save money on parts and tooling. I know I certainly don't hoon around like a nutter, and I've had no trouble at all with my rear rotors.
The handbrake is another story, though. I'm still waiting for my detached handbrake shoe shirt, too.
