Yes, probably the horizontal top links at the rear.
The front knocking is most likely the front droplinks.

Tbh tie bars end links all round both vertical or horizontal. For the price you can't go wrong

found the fronts on ecp thanks. look easy enough to do and rears aswell. just need to be careful to keep camber on rear correct.
is it just the drop links on the front that need looking at or are there any other bushes like arb that prove problematic.
haven't looked at fronts yet so don't know layout of suspension there.

Both front and rears are fairly straightforward, unless you get a seized nut on the front links or a seized inner bolt on the rears.
Best way to check the fronts is to have the wheels on the ground and pry the anti roll bar up and down and look for play.Best way to check the rears is to jack up the car and pull the wheel at 12 and 6 o clock.

checked the rears with wheels on ground and pulled wheel with hands at 12oclock position and a fair bit of movement with a definite knocking noise.
have ordered new rears from ecp. pretty cheap so might aswell do the stuff now

Re: 2001 2.0 hdi 110hp estate rear droplink help please
all rear knocking has now gone. just a faint knocking from the front left so will change those drop links this week. cam belt can hopefully wait for a few weeks until its warmer, maybe a bit of a gamble but bending over an engine in this weather is worse than lieing under the car
thanks for all the help and advice, great appropriated

Nice one
Having done the rears the fronts should be straightforward.
Here is a how-to for the droplinks.... viewtopic.php?f=10&t=17207
Just to add to the how-to, check the old links for having a couple of flats on the back which take a 17mm spanner to hold the joint whilst you undo the nut (some do)...don't forget to soak the nuts in WD40 the day before and overnight.
