406 2.1TD Wobble

Post by johnboy »

I got a 406 estate 2.1 as a run around while my HPI is being fixed up and just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on a slight problem i got.

There seems to be wheel wobble around 50mph but then it goes when you go above or below this speed, ive had both front wheels balanced and even changed over so i know its not coming from this... any ideas guys?

cheers

Obviously it's a dangerous death trap that could kill your entire family, best you give it to me

Does it pass up through the steering wheel? Does it pull to one side when doing it?

Well its funny u say that steve... i was going along the motorway yesterday doing around 60 and the front tyre blew out!!! luckily for me i was on my own and the family werent in the car at the time.

But anyway.. no i dont think the vibration comes up through the steering wheel, cant quite remember now id have to try it again, pretty sure its just at the wheels.

Ill be selling it when my other 406 is back on the road if ur interested? hehe.

Have you swapped the front and back wheels round? Did you watch them when they were balancing them up to make sure they got it spot on and also to check that the wheels were round and true (i.e. not buckled or twisted)?

No i didnt mate as the wife took it in to the garage and fitted my nice new michelin pilot and had sitting in my garage for ages... i knew it would come in usefull one day!! haha.

But yes i have swapped the backs to the front and made no difference.

Could it be a ball joint or engine mount maybe?

If it feels like there is a vibration through the whole car, that usual points to wheel bearing. Is there any noise when it happens?

Where are you based, what spec is it? (for later ;))

I dont think the whole car vibrates its just from the front wheels somewhere i think, kinda feels like an unbalanced wheel though but it cant be. :(

Also got a towbar wit twin electrics but i havent towed myself in it, was looking at buying a car trailer as i have my "summer" projects but that prob wont happen for a while. :( well ill have to see what money i got left afta ive fixed up my other car!!

If the problem is with a front wheel you will have a vibration through the steering wheel, if the wobble/vibration is through the car it will be a rear wheel/tyre problem.
I would bet on it being a faulty/buckled rear tyre.Jack up the car safely and spin each wheel, look for any wobble.

I was following a 307 yesterday and noticed something wrong with it's nearside rear tyre, was wobbling so bad it looked dangerous. As I got closer I realised that the whole wheel was buckled (or loose I suppose), must've been throwing by about an inch  . Didn't get a chance to flag the guy down to tell him either 'cos I lost him in traffic :| The car must have been vibrating like a washing machine though

406's do seem to be very sensitive to balancing.

When i got my old 2.1TD i had a wobble around 50-60mph, found out i had play in the driveshaft, replaced it and all was well. This was after i had 2 garages tell me it was fine.....
