Hi there Lozz, welcome aboard
Soo... this rattle, I take it it's going over rough road surfaces etc.? The usual one is the drop links but it appears you've checked them, although did you check them with the weight of the car on the wheels? Failing that, something's loose somewhere, mine makes a slight rattle that I can't trace but I have a suspicion I have a Mickey Mouse front bumper on it and it's not as secure as it should be.
1st-2nd change could be the DMF I'm afraid, not sure which HDi you have but this is on the HDi 2.0 110bhp and the 2.2 and should be replaced with the clutch. I presume you've had a good squint at the engine mountings

thanks for the reply,
ive checked the droplinks with the weight of the car on the ground and no play,
the top engine moutings are fine the front lower one on the osf is worn but not metal on metal,
bumper is secure ,

ive had another nosey over the car,
ive found the lower engine mouting as been bodged with bits of hose pipe and black silicone of some sort
couid that be the cause of the judder on the n/s/f ?
also when islam the anchors on the o/sf of the car seems too bounce 4 times then level off
if the shockers are Fubard couid they be the cause of this Anoying rattle ??
the judder ican live with for a short while but the rattle is so Anoying,
thanks inadvance,

406 drop links should be a service item, they're that bad
Hopefully the engine mount should sort out the juddering, unfortunately it seems to be a driveshaft out job, unless you're confident you can make a jig to press the new one in.
Tell us more about this bouncing, sounds a bit iffy to me

if i slam on hard the front end will bounce up and down atleast 4 times then settle,
if i hit a little hole in the rear end of the car the passenger side will fish out ,
so it looks like ineed a frontsuspension leg a engine mount or 2 and possibly A.r.b bushes on the rear end,

check your gearbox mountings, had the exact same thing and it took me and 3 other mechanics 4 hours to find it, lol.

Thanks for the reply,
ive now got rid of the judder on the front,
and the Rattle as stayed away now the almost new shiny looking droplinks have been removed and replaced
iM just left with a loss of control of the Arse end of the car its Tram lining carnt see out wrong tho
i think this poor old oil burner as been used as a Towing bus
Any ideas what couid cause the back end of it to fish out?
tyres are fine and plenty of tread on em,
the bushes look ok and intact and theres no movement visable in the anti roll bar either side,
im lost now what to look for

Could be the trailing arm bushes allowing too much movement under load?

It's the big arm that ends up forward of the rear wheels, where it connects to the chassis there's a big mounting bush. I'm not saying this is the problem but it may cause these problems.
You'd really need to get the car up in the air and go around all the sussy with a big pry-bar looking for play.
A common fault bar is the Anti-Roll mounting bushes (a D-shaped bush) but this normally leads to a knocking noise rather than affecting handling.
Tyre choice had a huge impact on the way a 406 feels and I remember mine used to really load up the rear when the
front tyres were worn down
I'm sure Bailes on here had trouble with the rear sussy and the camber was way out for some reason - can't remember what fixed that now.

thanks welly,
ive had a nosey over it again and carnt see anything that looks worn or as excess movement,
The old oil burner is due for an Mot so imight as well kill 2 birds with one stone so to speak.. and let the Mot tester find the fault for me,
Hopefully its not a Long list of fail,
regards loz

theres a skinny link, looks like a drop link, but runs horizontaly from the inner body to the hub iirc, my car failed its mot for these, and the handling improved dramatically after changing them.
