Knocking Noise...

Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone with experience could help me with an issue thats bugging the life out of me?

I had my clutch changed 2 weeks ago, during which the subframe had to be removed? (excuse my ignorance)

It was duly re-assembled and the clutch works fine, however...

Since then, I've had a knocking from the front intermittently when turning, going over bumps or putting the car under duress...

To remedy this, I've had the wheel bearings checked all round (1 was replaced), track rod ends replaced both sides, tracked, link rods replaced both sides... all appears tight as a drum suspension wise, and yet still the intermittent knocking appears....

Any thoughts? Could the sub frame be loose?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Mark.

i doubt the people doing the clutch would forget to tighten the subframe up ..

check the 3 torx bolts at the top of each strut. access under the bonnet ..

also check the 1 big nut in the center of the strut at the top. remove the black cover for this..

it could also be anti roll bar bush ..

Thanks Gary.

The top suspension mounts were checked and tightened on Friday last week and its still doing it. Will get the bushes checked, but apparently all appears tight from what the mechanic said? Are they under stress when at rest? i.e. is it possible that they would appear tight when stopped but show wear when moving?

Sorry for the lack of knowledge.

its possible yes.

have any of the wheels got any play in them. jack it up. and check for movement. slightest knocking.

if there is knocking there is something worn

my bottom engine mount shows no signs of it being knacked but it is

I guess you've never taken a car to a mechanic :frown: I've had one leave all my wheel bolts loose and another scrap a gearbox by putting the wrong oil in it so I'd have checked all that first.

Thanks for the advice all.

All the wheels have been jacked and checked for wheel bearings.

It would strike me that if the suspension has been virtually renewed, and the knocking started after the clutch, that it's not beyond reason to be associated with either a stressed enginer mount or the subframe, but as said, I'm a bit of a layman. I just know the knocking is more annoying to hear than being at a JLS concert :-)

the engine mount doesnt usually make the front end knock over bumps and general driving..

i would get the subframe checked and anti roll bar bushes 8)

You say noise happens whilst Turning ,
Hmm id be checking to see if theyve damaged a cv joint
or if theres enough Grease in the flower pot ends of the drive shafts, sometimes the bearings in them can thin out and if theres not enough grease create a knocking noise,

What do the Cv gaiters look like?

Hi all,

Many thanks for all your comments. Its fixed now. It was the sub frame? Apparently it was loose (more at the front than the rear). All tightened now and drives a dream.

Thanks again.

Mark.
