REAR SUSPENSION LOWER ARM - INNER PIVOT BOLT
Hi
Just put a new set of rear shocks on the 406 last week. The MOT is coming up soon and i was having a poke around underneath and noticed that the rear lower suspension arm inner bolt which has a bush has some play in it i can put the screwdriver in and there is a fair amount of play there. I've bought the part from GSF which only cost £4.65. Is it difficult to fit? It does say in the haynes manual that renewal of the inner pivot bush requires the use of a hydraulic press and several spacers? Has anyone managed to do this in situ without taking the whole arm off. I haven't got a hydraulic press so i'm thinking this might be a garage job?
I was having a look on Ebay and spotted This tool for doing the outer bush i wonder if it would work for the inner one? Have a look and see what you think. Not done one of these before £50 seems a lot of money for something that will only get used once or twice.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Re: REAR SUSPENSION LOWER ARM - INNER PIVOT BOLT
personally i would not buy that tool !
does a new arm not come with a new bush in it ?
if your thinking of buying that tool i would just use the money and pay extra for a new arm and bush

Hi
Lozz Just looked at your servicebox pic and its no 17 that needs replacing. Thanks for uploading that picture. I have the part here it only cost £4.65. I don't see how it would work out cheaper to buy a whole new bottom arm. No 1 is the top or upper arm.
Thanks

iwouid try threaded bar some big washers and 2 nuts it will drag that out no probs,
inever buy tools like that there a waste of money,
ive took alsorts out that Haynes says its a garage job or a press is needed its not realy if youve got a bit of time to knock up a tool,
if your local to manchester i couid make you up a tool that will pull that bush out

Re: REAR SUSPENSION LOWER ARM - INNER PIVOT BOLT
Hi
Manchester is about 5hrs away Lozz. But thanks for the offer. That threaded bar you were talking about would need to be the same sort of diameter as the bolt that comes out or maybe a fraction smaller? Needs plenty of penetrating oil on the bush as well. I'm thinking the same thing you are. I'm a bit fed up with going to the garages round here i know they will charge an hours labour to do this (they always seem to rush the job don't do it properly) which is nearly £60 here a bit of rip off if you ask me.
Thanks

Hi
Just had enough of garages here next to useless you can never get anything done quick if you book it in its at least a week before you can get it done!
When i put the new bush in will it need a bit of grease on it doesn't say anything in the manual because they obviously think its a garage job....
Thanks

Thanks for the bit of advice about putting the bush in the freezer. I've got some M12 threaded bar and washers and nuts. Will be having a go at this on weds. I'll let you know how it goes....

Re: REAR SUSPENSION LOWER ARM - INNER PIVOT BOLT
Hi
I've just replaced the inner bush on the rear suspension arm. What a difference its made to the car. The back end feels a lot tighter now and there was a noise on the backend like a rumbling which i was thinking could be a bearing but as it turned out it wasn't and the noise has gone.
The lower arm wasn't too to take off bad the nuts and bolts on the lower arm were in good nick so they have all been cleaned up and re-used. the spring looked okay and I was very lucky with the bush i live on a farm and there is a hydraulic press here it sits in the corner rusting away but it has 20 tonnes of pressure.
It took a while to figure out how to push the bush out of the arm but i cut the inner metal part of the bush off and used a 22mm socket and 24mm socket on top of the bush so that it pressed it out on the outside edge and it didn't take much to do it. Cleaned up the inside of the the lower arm and smeared some grease inside. The new bush had been sitting in the freezer for about 4 hours used the same socket to push the new bush in and it only took about 2mins to do. I definately wouldn't attempt to do this without a hydraulic press. If i'd been stuck i think i'd have just took the lower arm to the garage up the road and asked them to push the new bush in i don't think they would charge much for it. Now i've done the drivers side i'm going to do the the passenger side next weekend. I checked the bush on the outer pivot bolt and it looked fine. Next time i do the other arm i'll take some pics and post them if it helps anyone.

Re: REAR SUSPENSION LOWER ARM - INNER PIVOT BOLT
Hi everyone
I also need to replace the lower suspension arm on my faithful 4062.0 110hp hdi (2000 w) I've been a victim of bad garages of late who nearly had the car written off due to obsolete brake dust covers...there's no way I have the knowledge to try and replace bushes...does anyone know the part number for the lower suspension arm or know where I can get the part? I'm struggling thanks. it needs doing and it's such a great reliable car that I want to keep.
Does anyone live near Newcastle that could do it for me and be paid obviously...?
Thanks
