New Car (to me at least)

Well I finally gave up on the old 406 at 218,000 and some decidedly holey sills - stripping it down for parts for sale and to keep.

Now moved on to a GLX (oooh, the luxury) but still a 90, although now with com2000 (oh dear). It has less than 140,000 miles on the clock (I've never owned a 406 with so little mileage) and is a few years newer.

'New' car has got some decidedly dodgey paint on the front wings, bonnet and bumper so looking at replacing/spraying/living with the horrid truth that it's a little bit too untidy for my liking. Going to attempt to dry ice some of the minor dents out, see if I can't make it look a little bit closer to pristine.

Just getting the interior all sorted, changing dash bulbs etc (because they've blown, not because I want to tart it up or change them to ice blue or anything). Quite a few of the retaining clips for the headrests are broken so the headrests won't stay up - does anybody know if its possible to change them?

Also central locking doesn't work very often, think it's either the nearside front door lock sticking (it's quite stiff) or it's the door solenoid so will have to work on that asap as disconnecting the battery to lock all the doors looks a little naff.

The rear windows go up and down very slowly, I don't know whether this is due to under or over use - does anyone have any recommendations on how to improve/service them or is it just replacement motors?

The metal and rubber trim that goes below the windows has bubbled up quite badly in places - can you buy this separately and can it be bought quite cheaply - it does look rather unsightly!

Also the front is a bit squirmy, the tyres are a bit cack, and for some reason the radial rears are on the wrong side, still seems a little bit too squirmy despite these factors - oh, and having alloys is a right pain with the different wheel nuts and the locking nut - seriously tempted to go back to steels, would make me happier (speaking of which does anyone have any wheel nuts they want shot of, I'd rather put steels on with the proper steel wheel nuts rather than the alloy ones - I have a set of winter tyres on steels still you see)!

Anyway, I'll be tweaking and tidying at the weekend and reporting back then. All the best, Phil

P.s. When did he tax for the post March 2001 406's go up from £125 to £165 - I feel robbed!

Hi mate Re: dry ice /dent removal.
Get one of them Air duster things, aerosol.

warm the dent up first with Air dryer.
shake air duster (aerosol)
turn can upside down and spray it on the warmed up dent,
youl hear it go ping.

Dry ice never tryed that as theres no where to get it from up here,
the duster as worked for me tho on some Minor dents, the dusters blow out ice cold air when turned up side down thus creating same afect as dry ice,

Dry ice works, just need some really, really thick gloves (girlfriend got dry ice free from work, it's used to transport some sciencey type stuff or other - no, I don't pay attention when she gets to the science bit). I've done it in a few stages and gradually brought out about 5 'car park' type dents (including the typical two either side of the tailgate badge that all estates seem to have). Don't think this technique would have any effect on deep scratches/scrapes though.

Bloody door locking on the car is driving me crazy. Can't put stereo in until I've sorted this. Also disconnecting the battery now means the remote central locking is no longer working! Argh! Tried reprogramming as per the manual and write-ups on this site but refuses to work. On the old car I could disconnect the battery all the time and the central locking would work again straight away - is this misery caused by com2000/multiplex? Annoyingly I have a working setup on the old car but can't for the life of me work out how to take the locking components out of the door without bending/breaking something or having to drill out some rivets - it's p***ing me off.

Handling seems to have been sorted with some better tyres and some new link rods. Old ones seemed okay but can't have been. Anyone got any advice on reconditioning the electric window motors - can this even be done?

Found out nearside electric mirror is not broken, the glass is barely stuck on - freaks you out when the whole thing just drops out. Thankfully it's held in by the heated window wiring which I've now disconnected from the glass. Two questions, firstly what glue could/should I use to stick it back to the white foamy backing and secondly which way round do the blue and red wires go.

Found a good wing and bumper at a reasonable price at the breakers but still looking for a good bonnet. Don't need a new door after the dry ice treatment, just some new clips for the black and chrome door trim (few pounds off ebay).

Not liking this car so far - somebody help me to start liking the 406 again - my old pre multiplex 406 was so, so, so much better.

Well I've played around some more with the central locking and am still having no joy. Have taken two working door locks from the old car and changed over both doors, then alternated between sides in all the various combinations and am still not able to lock and unlock all the doors from the drivers side. I can lock and unlock all the doors from the passenger side - although it doesn't seem quite right.

I have to assume at this point that it's not the solenoids or the locks or any stiff rods etc so I reckon the only thing I'm left with is a break in the wiring (probably on the drivers door)? I've started to have a look at the rubber section between the door and the car to see if there is a plug connection there so I can swap over the door wiring from one car to the other but got rather stuck trying to work out what was there. Tried to come in from the inside out but the carpet is a right bloody pain and I don't really want to mess that all up.

Also, the new car seems to have a small thin battery by the sill in the drivers foot well - what's this for? The wires off it seem to run to the back of the car.

Still having no joy with getting the remote to work again. Have changed the battery for a known working battery and again tried turning the ignition on and holding the lock button for 10 seconds - want to smash something up soon. The remote was working before I disconnected the battery and now nothing, I really am starting to hate this car.

As an aside I have checked all the carpets and the plugs and none of them seem to have suffered from water ingress so I don't think it's a problem in that respect.

Drivers side carpet has a hole in it - has anyone changed carpets over as it seems a right pain to me!

finally, found a thread which suites my topic and posting on it without opening a new one. About couple of weeks back I've bought a new Peuget (to me at least :)) after driving different cars for over two months since I sold the D8. This time got myself a nicely looked after D9 Executive.

will upload more pics as time permits and need to sort out a delayed start issue on cold startings. There's another Volkswagen Golf accompanying the 406 to compensate the fuel economy and running expenses.
