2000 (V) 406 2.0 hdi

Hello again guys, my wonderful 406 turning into a bit of a project!!!!!!

New clutch fitted mid January all okay. Leaving for work the other morning 0500 and the rear o/s wheel seized solid, tried stripping it down today, surprise couldn't get the drum off . N/S rear wheel turns and stops when handbrake is applied.

1. What is the most likely cause!
2. Any "drum" pictorial guides around can only find "disc". I really do far better with a picture !!

As always fellas any words of experience and advice will be very gratefully recieved.

Handbrake cable may be seized with brake shoes in contact with the drum.

Would suggest removing cable, lubricating and trying to get shoes to release and also winding back adjuster

Many thanks for the response, having had a look through the forum could do with a little guidance .

1. Loosen the cable at side of Handbrake? ( Can't seem to access it through centre console)??
2. Cannot find cable link (adjuster) underneath the car??

Disconnect cable at the connector, image below. You will have to remove the heatshield to get at it ( The other end is inside the drum )

Drums on a d9

If it turns out to be the cable that's corroded, then you'll end up replacing it anyway.

If you can get some movement in the old cable, then the drums will come off easier once you've wound back the adjuster

Thanks for the pic dummysock, found it this morning. The adjuster is badly badly rusted up impossible to get spanner or pliers on it!
WD40'd up and just waiting to have another go in a bit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the effort lozz, but yes drums on mine not discs!!!

Try getting hold of the handbrake cable where it comes out of the backplate and curves round then waggle the cable, twisting it at the same time...this might free off the drum....if so then the handbrake cable is probably the culprit.

There could also be a problem with a brake shoe material seperating from the brake shoe and jamming the brake drum.

Bash the front of the brake drum if all else fails to free it.

Just a quick update guys, good shout Jasper material had indeed come off the shoe and jammed it up!! Getting the drum off had to be the equivalent of a 3 hour gym workout though

Glad you got it sorted in the end

The worst one I ever had was an old Citroen ZX rear drum which would not budge no matter what, I ended up cutting the drum in half with an angle grinder...the shoe material had come off and jammed that one too....very common on Clios jammed up drums and broken shoes.
