Newby - Worn steering rack?

Hi there

Have recently acquired a 406 saloon Executive 2.1 TD 110bhp 151,000 miles.

The steering groans and creaks in use, particularly on tight slow speed manoeuvres...

Is this likely to be down to a worn steering rack? Is there anything that can be done such as lubricating it? Or is it a case of just get used to it? An expensive job to get replaced I guess...?

Many thanks

Steve

Good effort... what does the rack itself cost new, or did you buy a second hand one?

Check your top suspension mountings/bearings before you look at the rack. Check if the spring looks like it is being turned when you turn the steering, if so then the top bearings are worn.
