thought the brakes wernt as sharp as they useully are so done a bit of a looking before rain stopped play and the rear brakes arent doing much.with the pedal pressed i can still turn both wheels by hand!!the pads look good and the calipers are moving gripping the disc and freeing off so any ideas?
i should add that i havnt done any work on the brake system so cant see it being air in the system, brake fluid is clean no leaks,if the caliper was seized it wouldnt work at all so is there anything in common with both sides?
oh yes its a d8 model with discs and the handrake shoes inside the drum.

Probably the sliding pins are seized: if so the caliper is pushing the inner pad against the disk but the caliper isn't sliding over to pull the outer pad onto the disk, so it's bending the disk instead
I'm sure it'll all become clear once you pull it to pieces...
Hmm, I can't remember if yours is a saloon or an estate, I think saloon but the estate also has a load valve on the rear beam axle which could break.

not sure on the d8s but,
iirc the 405s had a compensator for the rear brakes, and if the spring broke, the rear brakes went crap,
iwonder if the early d8s have the spring and compensator

well had a look today and the piston in the caliper is working but i think this is a sliiding caliper and the other side isnt sliding so
can you split the caliper down on the car so i dont have to bleed it all when i have finished?
what do i undo to split it?
whats the best stuff to use to make it slide i was thinking some high temp grease

Don't split the caliper, you will end up replacing it!!
Free off all the sliders and pads.

I have a similar problem with my 2000 Hdi 110 estate. I just looked on the quoted link and only found this at the top of the 406 recall list ; " August 1997 – Setting of brake compensator. 333 cars affected " . Is there any way to check recalls against the VIN # ? Thanks.

All recalls are listed on the VOSA site, all vehicles and makes.

Thanks, I put a new set on one side 2 years ago and lubed the other at the same time . When I checked temperatures, both rears were cold, even though they are polished.
I can't put it off any longer, have to take a look and check .

Eats humble pie ....................sliders seized on one side, pads seized in housing on the other. All bolts had been liberally coated with a copper anti-seize, sliders packed with moly CV grease.
Will put on " to check " maintenance list. Also found it has no load sensing valve in rear brake circuit.
