needing some advice on how to repair an oil leak on the power steering pipework.

there is a rigid pipe (aluminum i think) comes out of the power steering reservoir and then changes to flexi hose and then re-connects to a rigid pipe and then goes to the pump, its on the aluminium pipe just after the flexi where there is a securing bracket that attaches it to underside of the car, the pipe either has a small crack or has corroded slightly, does anyone know of an easy repair as it looks like a nightmare to replace the pipe. (and probaly pretty costly)
if there wasn't constantly a drip coming from it i would have put a drop of araldite on it but i don't think it would cure due to the oil, i have tried a piece of rubber and a jubilee clip but it didn't work.

this cant be a first, a better man must have overcome this problem before now.

any advice greatly appreciated.

I had exactly this pipe go exacxtly as you describe. Its quite easy to change if you take the head light out, and then you can see it all easily.
And the new pipe wasnt to expensive either. Although I cant remember how much, it wasnt stupid money.
I find the thing with pug parts is not to assume that its expensive, but get hold of the dealer and find out the truth.

i have a spare complete pipe for a d8 here.

I have this exact same issue too.
My leak is where the flexi-hose meets the metal pipework just above the scratch panel under the radiator.
I don't know if that power steering stop leak product would help or whether there is a wat to modify the pipes in some way in order to upgrade it's durability.

Parts can be had from a breakers yard for sub £30 so not that expensive to put right if you go for original parts.
They would just need to be cleaned thoroughly before use to save from any contamination in the system.

That stop leak stuff wont work mate,
it will just end up on the road imho

if its the metal pipe thats leaking, if you found the hole/break, you couid plug it with jb weld

I figured it would leak regardless.

The leak is right at the point where the flexi-hose meets the metal pipework.
Judging on the consistency of how many of these fail i would call it a design fault.
That being said however, if it lasts in excess of ten years then there really isn't much to complain about.

Yep, mine went at about ten years and about 200,000 miles, so not to bad as you say. And it was right at the joint of the metal and flex bit.

I think it's part number 10 in this diagram.

gave the car to a local mechanic to fix and he said the leak was on the low pressure side (I'm assuming he means pre pump)
so because of this he could cut and join the pipe, he cut the section out and pieced in a small section of rubber hose with 2 jubilee clips, has been fine so far. fingers crossed.

appeared after looking for coolant leak of unknown origin on my 406 at, 2.0ltr 16v 2001
for all those who have coolant leaks of unknown origin, and there were a lot replys on
various forums, it turned out to be the core plugs on top of the cylinder head next to the spark plugs.
I bought the car new in 2002, in Thailand, conditions here are arduous temperatures extreme,
I have had very little trouble with it in 10 years. 6 services, one set brake pads, one timing belt,
wheel bearings full set ( not necessary but i chose to renew) two sets michelin pilot sport,
one radiator thermostat, one windscreen. not bad after 120000 km. I don't know why 406's
get such bad reviews.

Leak on the return pipe to reservoir can indeed be bridged with rubber pipe and jubilee clips.
Also the. Cooler zigzag (item 10) is probably not critical when operated in UK ambient temperatures. A lot of 306 GTi guys. Delete when their low presssure return cooling loop rusts through.

Guys i think this is a common fault on all 406,mine has leak also there.
I was thinking that my reservoir is broken and its leaking slowly there,didnt bother to check it really cuz it drops slow.
We could create some topic about all known faults on 406.

Btw where do you find those diagrams for 406,i was searching for some free download on the net but there are only for D9?

how do you unscrew that steering reservoir,i cant get near that little screw down the plastic rabit hole.

Off you go then It would probably be rather big, all it really needs is someone to write a post showing how to do it (preferably with pictures) and someone will sling it in the knowledge base.

No i was thinking that screw that holds the reservoir on chasis,(my english ),its in really tight place and near it is engine mount.
