Rear Brake Back Plates.... again!

So my journey to work this morning was accompanied by a squeeling sound from the back of the car, which then turned into a grinding sound

. Upon arrival in the car park I investigated, only to find that the off side rear back plate had disintigrated and part of it had disappeared, the lower half was hanging by a thread and rubbing on the wheel, hence the noise.... So the wheel had to come off to remove the remnants, a splendid way to start your working day, got some strange looks in the car park!
Here's what was left of the plate...
And here's the shiny grove it wore in my alloy, glad I didn't leave it any longer...
Guess I need new ones then.....

Yes, a great start to your day.
Either you're seriously unlucky, or I'm the opposite - AFAIK, mine's still on the original set & while they didn't look pristine when I changed the rear brakes in January last year, they didn't look anything like yours. Maybe it's all that snow you showed us a year or two back?
Hope you get it sorted painlessly.

Those backplates seem to rust badly. Mines got holes in them i just patched them up with some fibreglass and gave them a coat of hammerite. Thats about all you can do really.

For give my incontinence here but do the back plates 'just' hold all the gubbins for the handbrake?

Yeah they hold the handbrake stuff and provide a bit of a splash guard for the discs. As it's only the outer bit that's fallen off I'm tempted to leave it as is... whadda ya reckon??

Dunno, I guess if the handbrake bits fail the handbrake won't work effectively.... oh wait...
Seriously though, I've got no idea whether it's safe, whether it would fail "safely" etc, suppose I'd better lop off a limb and get it fixed. Did anyone ever locate a non-dealer source for the back plates?

Ade does them, as far as I remember. Can't find any on ebay but it must be worth asking.
