Hiya Again Guys,

My wonderful V reg 2.0 HDi becoming a bit of a project!!!!!

Have done a search on the forum and can't find anything specific, fluid spewing from N/S rear drum, got the drum off and inside covered in fluid literally dripping not even cleaned it up so assuming it can only be the cylinder! Changed shoes on O/S few weeks back so have a new set of shoes for this side, just really want to know how big a job it is to change the cylinder and if I've missed a walkthrough or How to somewhere on the site!

Thanks a million as always fellas as always you are my saviours....

Regards
Steve

Hardest bit is the brake pipe,
iwouid soak it in wd40., sometimes they can be a pain to undue, ..

the cylinders are not expensive,

If you carnt shift the brake pipe or it shows sighns of it going to snap/bend. leave it alone: once it breaks it result in going having a pipe made up: theres a plan b option,
not many people do this anymore but you can swap over the insides of a new cylinder and put them in the old one,
they used to do rebuild kits afew year back but looks like them days are gone,

Thanks for the reply lozz, yeah my local guy can get the cylinder £17 or £19 depending if its got a central or offset bleed nipple? Going to give it a go me thinks, brakepipe connection at rear looks nice and clean so WD40'd it up for tonight and will have a bash tomorrow.

Any advice on inexpensive brake cleaner??

Many thanks as usual help genuinely appreciated!

Steve............

Shop around for the brake cleaner, it's £3-50 at most car shops round here!

To fit a new cylinder....

Remove the shoes.

Clamp off the flexible rubber pipe with a brake clamp or small mole grips GENTLY and carefully applied.

After soaking the pipe for as long as possible carefully undo it....if you struggle to undo it or round off the pipe end use a big pair of molegrips clamped on the pipe nut, take out the bleed screw or break it off if it gets in the way.......if the pipe is being tight to unscrew just undo it slightly and spin off the old cylinder from inside the backplate.

Tap on the old cylinder (knock it downwards) to loosen the rust on the 2 cylinder mounting bolts and remove them.

Tap out the old cylinder.

Clean the backplate.

Leave out the bleed screw to give you more room.

Carefully screw in the brake pipe....it's a lot easier to spin the new cylinder onto the brake pipe from inside the backplate....don't tighten it yet.

Screw in the 2 mounting bolts and tighten....now tighten the brake pipe and fit the bleed screw, remove the hose clamp.

Fit your brake shoes and clean the brake drum before fitting it.

Bleed the brake by attaching a tube to the bleed screw and get someone to press the brake all the way down with the bleed screw open then tell them to keep the pedal to the floor and tighten the bleed screw......repeat this until there is clean fluid flooding out the tube and no air is present....lock up the bleed screw and check for a solid brake pedal.

Remember, you are working on a safety critical item so do not take chances and make sure there are no leaks and the brakes work correctly before taking the car on the road!

Tremendous as usual guys, thank you!

jasper5 fantastic walkthrough many thanks.. the pipe going to the cylinder via the back plate is a "metal" pipe and not a flexible one by the way?

Again thanks a million fellas.

Hiya Fellas,

Cylinder and shoes replaced but a problem(lots of swearing and scuffed knuckles and blood blisters)

Worth mentioning I think for anybody out there doing a cylinder replacement two types available it says ABS and non ABS the only difference is the "bore" of the brake pipe attachment so check if 10mm or 12mm!

Now to the totally amateur advice needed again guys  All back together!!!!!!

Minus this spring    Just cannot see where it could attach or connect???

Full pic of replacement job, Handbrake spring not yet attached.

Thank you again guys, took pics prior to removal but no sign of the spare spring on pics
Have checked out the O/S wheel and cannot see it on there either!!!!!!!!!
Apologies for the crappy pics!!
