I think i have a bit of a clunk from the rear of my car sometimes. My rear tyres are nearly on the limit and that my car usally is a bit rougher on the rear when they are worn.Car has done 177k now and nearly 10 years old & i`ve never replaced anything on the rear apart from the shocks & springs. There seems to be some play in the arb bushes,no play in the metal drop links but play in the plastic links & arm bushes.Got a video of it so hopefully someone can say weather the play is normal or if its worn out. :)Image

In my opinion,I think it would be best to replace all of that, there is a little bit of play there mate.

It's probably the ARB links, they shouldn't have any play in them. I had clunking from the rear of mine and replacing the links cleared it right up.

Well,i think i will replace both sets of links & arb bushes,as they are the cheapest & easy to do.If you`ve seen my vid,the 1st bush that i`m moving with my bar, does anyone think that needs doing?Or is there suposed to be that movement in it?And would i need to get the rear set up properly once i`ve replace the parts??
Cheers :)

The first bush looks like it's just flexing, the others are hard to tell (you usually get a clonk if they've got play but you've got to get them just right). The one at the end, looks like an arb link, definitly look like there's corrosion in there. Top links are favourite if your wheel alignment's going for a burton anyway.

It seems like you shouldn't need to get the geometry checked if the adjusters go back on exactly the same but it might be worth checking for peace of brain.

Well i ordered 2 rear metal links,2 plastic links & 2 arb bushes. Not the cheapest on ebay but from the same person that i got my front strut bearings from, due to speedy delivery & good all round service. While i was at it this morning i also brought a front coupe strut brace from ade,£20  Starting to collect quite a few new parts now, with a cambelt kit, water pump & 2 new rear tyres to come :( £££ Hopefully it will be dry next weekend & i can get a lot of it done.

Got around to renewing the rear parts today. The arb bushes were ****ed  They were very hard & brittle & looked if they had been burnt in a fire.I suspect thats what the knocking was. Also done both the plastic & metal link bars. There did`nt seem to be any play in the ball joints, but they were very easy to move compared to the new ones. The good news is there is now no more knocking & with my 2 new rear tyres(£123 for 2 avon 205/55/16V`s + front tracking, rear was fine)the car no feels like new & rides very well.
The bad news  The l/h/side anti roll bar clamp was secured by 2 nuts on studs.Much cleaning with a wire brush & plenty of spray, the came undone fine. But on the r/h/side the clamp was secured by 1 stud & nut,& 1 bolt. The bolt sheered off  leaving about 8mm of thread.I ground down the surface of the arb clamp,& the surface of a 16mm nut & just managed to get the nut to tighten on the broken bolt.I think i will have to drill out the broken bolt,& thread a new bolt in.But hey ho.
Pics are old v new arb bushes.
