tight spots on steering on my 2001 2.0hdi
can anyone help got tight/hard spots on my steering on my 406hdi 2001
Re: tight spots on steering on my 2001 2.0hdi
Welcome
Check the top suspension mounting bearings first, check that they turn smoothly....if the coil spring is trying to twist then you need new bearings.
If all is well with the bearings check the steering column universal joints.

Yeah you need new top mount bearings.
Get it done asap as you may snap a spring.

a wee bit of background..
i seem to be in quite a few different boats at the moment as i must jump aboard this one as well.
I snapped a spring at christmas so changed the top bearing at the same time as a new spring. just to be nice to the taxi i chanaged the other side top bearing and everything was good for a few weeks then the steering went all heavy and patchy a couple of weekends later and a rather loud eewok started to wine and moan with any movement of more than 20 degrees either way.. Had a look round the forum and most posts related to the pas pump , I got a 2nd hand off ebay and got it fitted and all was good for a couple of weeks untill the same noises started comming from the pas pump again so i am back to square one trying to find the cause.
when i start the car for a shift for the first 10 mins its very heavy in both directions then it eases up and only heavy at one point while turning left. but the pas pump still wines when it wants, if the steering is loose it can moan, if the steering is stiff it can moan,. it could be a bad pas pum. it could the the UJ or the rack itself.
You have changed the UJ and its still the same i would go for the top bearings before the pas pump or the rack. thats just my thoughts and may differ from others
for my probs i think i have a bad top bearing

406 D9 2002 in Met blue . Full leather interior. Fully working puddle lights (LED's). Both interior lights work from the front switched light (LED's). Door handle Lights (internal LED's). Yup i love LED's but not as much as the BSI does .
