Hi all my parking brake retaing pins have been snapping or breaking lately. I have already replaced the full set& think 1 has just went again. Has any1 had the same bother or are they vibrating loose which tbh is a pain in the bum

Hi mate, the probable cause is the back-plate being worn away where the securing pins fits in. To check, the slot for the bayonet type pin should be straight up and down, but if it looks like a + then the pin will shake back through the hole.
I have my passenger side flapping about at the moment but on the drivers side I put a slim bolt through the spring, into the back-plate with a washer and nut on the back. Its a pain to do as its a bit fiddly but works a treat. Don't do it up too tight as the shoe still needs to move.
New back-plates are £175 new, and decent second-hand ones are hard to find as this is a common fault on the 406.

If you pull the handbrake ever so gently when driving ( just enough to take up the slack ) and the noise disappears, you have lost or loosened the pin.

Tbh I'm thinking of getting a set off another car that fit the other way round as in pin put through the back of the backing plate & with a normal spring & lock washer

Yes, give it a go. It is a bit tricky to get round the back and you may need a washer or two.
Let us know how you get on.. 8)

I was thinking about your bolt idea in place of the pin. Did u use a m4 bolt & did u have 2 drill the backing plate hole. ??????

Hi, not sure what size bolt it was, just one I found in the shed..!

I had to bend the end of the spring to get the bolt through and it went into the back-plate easy as mine was so worn out
Try to find a counter-sunk bolt so it fits flush into the spring, and you will need to put the nut into some pliers to reach behind the back-plate.

Maybe for the n/s of my car I will try to feed a bolt from the back-plate to the spring.

Cheers trouble is I will have to see about getting some springs as when they go ping they dissapear. But u have to buy them as part of a kit pins, springs & the springs that hold the shoes together. By the way I notice in ur signature it says ur in the bournemouth area u have a pp200 does that clear & tell u whast up (fault codes) cos my abs light & low water oh & the stop brake light come on & off quite often

Hi, yes I have pp2000 but I am relatively new to it and still learning...!!

The last kit I bought for the rear brakes was only £6 or so.
