I know the next thread down is about tyres, but I'm not quite in the same boat.

A quick check today on what were moderately worn tyres last time I looked reveals I'm barely legal on all corners.
Looking about £60 a tyres seems about the going rate for anything that's not a Russian remould. Yet I really don't have £240 lying about - tough times for the wallet right now.

What are peoples thoughts on the best options?

I'd have two pairs of part-worns, or a set of 4 if you're lucky.

Go for part-worns. I have been using them for a while and most places nowadays lets you look through their stock to see what you like.

Alternatively, buy some cheap alloys off ebay / gumtree with half decent tyres on already - you can sell them on when tyres are worn out and put that money towards another set.

Seems a bit pricey for part worn, usually around £20 each fitted including balancing and valves...

Will you be fitting the tyres yourself or do you have a mate than can do it cheap, if not then add another £50 to the cost...

Depends how you drive and what you're like as an owner:

A brand-new set of El'Cheapo tyres would be reassuring that they are new (and belong to you only) BUT they could be noisy, slidy on roundabouts, the steering might feel spongy and the braking distance might increase. Apart from the noise issue if you don't hoon about like a mad man then budget tyres should do fine.

Other than that a part-worn Premium brand but *closely* inspected for curbing/nicks/bulges/puncture repairs/cracks (shall I go on?). Goodyear NCT5's and Michelin Energy I always found suited the car but we've all got different opinions on tyres; for example the Pirelli P6 gets negative comments on these car forums.

That exactly what she's wearing now and I'd rate them as well below par for a premium brand. Even when fairly young they offered up less grip than a gloveless man climbing everest.

I have P6's on mine and they seem ok to me, even in the wet. What have you tried in the past that has been better?

I'm a massive hater of part worn tyres. I think they're dangerous and ought to be illegal! I've seen first hand how dangerous they can be!

A set of budgets would be a better bet to me, just make sure you keep in mind they are budgets, there are some better budget brand out there! Have a look at Falkens, they are usually good value for money. I usually order mine off Blackcircles and use tyrereviews.com to check them out before I buy.

I personally loved michellins on my 406! Everything else felt like a compromise.

I thought it might be worth adding to this thread. I was in a similar situation early last year. No money but need tyres. I hunted around and found that I could buy a pair of new, half-reasonable M & S tyres for less than a pair of 'budget' tyres. I ran them for a couple of thousand miles before finding a pair of wheels from a scrappy to have my 'normal' tyres fitted. I did the same again towards the end of the year, but with a pair of Winter tyres. So now have four tyres per season. My plan was to get a fifth winter tyre, but hasn't happened yet. (Note to self: Get out and do it!)

I almost always buy part-worns.

For my car , 196/65 x 15 , about £20 fitted and balanced, new valves..
The tyre will have about 4mm of tread.

Same tyre, with 4/5+ mm of tread, about £25 ...

I use well established part-worn tyre sellers.

The only time I've ever bought a really bad second-user tyre was when I took economising too far, and bought a wheel with tyre
from a scrapyard. (Not the 406). The steel cores inside the tyre had separated, and caused huge vibration.

With budgets, the compromises seem to be everywhere. Either really hard, with no wet grip. Or they seem to wear
so fast you can almost watch it happening. Noise. Ride.

I've currently got Michelins on 3 out of 4 tyres. The other one is due for replacement soon.

So Sam what's your suggestion in my case.
Dad to 4 kids all pretty much grown but still expect presents all the same, Granda to 5 grandkids, again expecting presents, its the 12 December and ive just gotten an unrepairable puncture to a front tyre.Both fronts are down to 3mm so were getting changed soon but i can get a pair of Bridgestones(Part-worn for £30 each fitted) or a pair of the cheapest tyres locally no idea of make etc etc at £60 each, bearing in mind i'm on the sick from work at the moment only on SSP so i'm about £300 a week short on money.

So should i go part-worn on a known tyre or new on a unknown tyre ??

I've been running M+S tyres constantly for 18months now ( part-worns £20 each ) and they are just above the tread markers so need 4 more tyres. Went to local scrappy earlier and found 1 pair of P6000 and a pair of Autogrip??? Both sets have 5-6mm left on them.

The cost will be £25 each so will try to haggle as I'm buying 4. I hope to have them fitted Saturday morning. If I get another 18months out of these I will be well happy.

I have to say, I hated the P6000s on my D8. Awful tyres
