Strut top bearing failed/seized and the spring is under torsion, rotating in its cup?

Hi Robb,

Definately sounds like top strut bearing has had it. Mine did this for some time but it eventually went boingggg......clunk ! as the spring snapped and the suspension hit the deck.

Never did it going over bumps or in a straight line.

Cheers.

Yes, get it checked immediately. If the spring goes bang then the car will be immobilised in spectacular fashion, in addition to a new bearing you'll need to buy a new spring and whatever else gets taken out, potentially brake hoses and a tyre! If you get it sorted now then it's just a bearing.

I agree with the other posts, however my bearing was seized and I only knew about it when the car failed its MOT as the steering wouldn't ' self-centre '....

I guess if is creaking and groaning then maybe it is more perished than you realise - worth an inspection just to be safe.

Safest way to do them is take the whole leg off and take that and the new bearing to a local indepenent garage and ask them to assemble it.
I can't see them asking a fortune to do it and the leg comes off easy enough with basic hand tools and some persuasion.
