new tyres?

looking for new tyres for my 2.0hdi, 195/65/15
Anybody got any feedback on Goodyear efficientgrip performance tyres, the reviews look good wondered if they suit the 406?

If you can get access to the Which? magazine that tested tyres a few months ago, they give a good review of 195/65/15s. I have always bought cheapy tyres but the Michelins were not much dearer so I went for them. It depends how you drive as they don't have the best roadholding but they are quiet and have the longest tread life which is fine for me.

If you know someone who subscribes to Which they can look up the report on line or failing that I will.

I fitted a set to mine last February, had to replace the fronts in November. (Tracking issue).
I would say they were good in terms of wet and dry grip, but felt a tiny bit squidgy compared to the Dunlop SP fast response that were on it previously.
Noise level very good, nice to drive, but life a bit disappointing.
I put two Fuldas on the front, so far these seem good.

I keep hearing about people paying over the odds for fitting etc on Internet bought tyres.
I generally try to use a local tyre shop for tyre purchases. I have not yet paid what I consider any more than buying on Internet, and the service has always been impeccable.

Indeed, typically you'd pay £10.00 or £12.00 a corner for 'fit only' closing the gap in any cost savings you might have seen.

I just checked with the AA on line tyres and the price they quote includes fitting /balance /new valve, and disposal of old tyre. Also have cheapest price garantee ?
Sounds good to me I checked with local tyre centre and they were over £11/tyre dearer

2 Michelin Energy Savers fitted last week at my Part Worn specialist.
1 @ 5mm tread.
1 @ 6mm.

Total cost £50 + tip.

I'm all for part-worn tyres if you just potter about locally. Just had two fitted on her indoors' Astra for £60.00 and they were practically brand new. The place I used is connected to a car 'dismantlers' I'd imagine they get some decent stuff in with MOT failures, minor accidents etc.

I've been using part worns for the last 4yrs and have had no bother, motorway/local 20k/yr.
my supplier has stopped doing part worns. I have looked at others in the area but no good stuff, I only buy quality make part worns so with the price of new tyres now so competitive on line I'am going to try it . will let you know how it goes!

I haven't tried part-worns on my Volvo yet but the way things are going I think the next set will have to be.

Some would say that you don't know the history of the tyre but let's face it when we buy a used car we don't know that either; we just drive it home. Sure if tyre structure was damaged the tyre should show this by vibrating/wobbling or have a massive bulge in the side maybe but the chances of an 'in date' used tyre suddenly disintegrating are extremely small in my opinion.

I bought a used Mazda MX6 years ago from a reputable dealer and on collecting the car I used the motorway at high-ish speed for 1.5 hrs to get home. A few days later I could sense a kinda pat-pat-pat from one of the wheels.....turns out the car had most likely been sat around on a dead-flat tyre for long enough to destroy the tyre's carcass but there was no drama otherwise it was just an odd shape.

I have no problem with used tyres, as Welly says you don't know the history of them when you buy a car. If there is any damage on them you should be able to see it, especially by looking inside the tyre.

Most of the scrap yards have gone from down here so I don't get the opportunity to get used tyres but I would if I could.

The place I used have loads of 'front enders' in either smashed or burnt out but the rear tyres don't suffer; they don't skid and if they do hit something it's only lightly. Many cars get scrapped having recently had new tyres i.e. within a few weeks so why not grab the tyres off 'em? a decent place will let you inspect the things first.
