I'm going to give the whole braking system an overhaul soon and I know the rear backplates were rough a couple of years ago,how much do they run at for a pair nowadays?

Back in 2012 they were £93.00 + vat each & your need to replace the rear hub / wheelbearing assembly while your at it
You'll be doing the disc's pads & brake shoes, handbrake cable oh & maybe a caliper overhaul / replacement
Probably £500 ish all told

They're now almost a ton each from Pug

(I'm surprised they're not NLS yet...). They do come up 2nd hand on the bay but rarely these days (the last few have been drum brake ones too) or you could try contacting Ade1122 on the bay or via the coupe club. I think he charges about 25 quid each.

Might have to bite the bullet then and get new ones

.To be honest over the last 3 years the car's cost me very little to run so i might treat it to a new set and get all the brakes up to scratch ready for winter.

It seems a bit excessive to me, are your old ones really that bad? If they're just a bit flaky you could have them acid dipped and galvanised...

I did a bit of googling and see the backplates are made by klokkerholm for peugeot. they call it a splash panel.
p/n left: k5536877 p/n right: k5536878 £36 pounds each.
I gave
http://www.carz2.co.uk a call on 01684 565 882 and she is apparently ordering them from Denmark, should take 3 weeks, then I shall be contacted to deal with payment. (They seem to work on a 3 week ordering cycle)
Anyone used this website? I will wait and see if I get a call back. fingers crossed or my 406 is toast.

Just a note about another car with a similar problem to the 406 that people might be interested in....
Yesterday I did a Mercedes SLK with a handbrake fault...the handbrake shoe holding pins (they are little coil springs on these that slot through the backplate) had pulled through the backplate due to the backplate having corroded away where the pins go through!!
Note the familiar problem
It needed the linkages freeing off and new shoes fitting...fitting those springs through the backplate is VERY tricky!!
I used penny washers with a normal brake shoe holding pin round clip fitted in reverse to fasten the springs through the backplate.

They look like pattern parts to me but substantially cheaper than Pug so worth a shot I reckon. Please do keep us posted!
Oh looky, they do sills too
