2001 406 Estate
Ive got a rumble and knock at the front at slow speeds, looked at the droplinks today and they seem fine but with the car body lifted and the front wheels hanging there is some play at the nearside front wheel with my hands at 9 and 3 if I rock the wheel at 6 and 12 there is no movement.

Any ideas? could it be the track rod end? its difficult to see where the actual movement is taking place.

Moving the wheel in and out at the top should show any movement in the track rod end, if that's OK its probably the lower ball joint, you need to take the weight off the wheel to see if that moves.

The the weight off the wheel there is no play at top or bottom the play at the sides though
