I seem to recall someone (Blue406 possibly) saying that the white clocks are lit by LEDs and the black clocks lit by bulbs. Probably best not to trust my memory though :(

I did discover the white dials are lit by LED, but I think that is true off all Multiplexed dials actually.
It should be a straight swap :)

a straight swap, and i intend to split the clocks to get by the mileage issue
but out of interest is there any good pictures of a standard 2 Button MFD split open so i can see how possible it is to wire up 2 external buttons
