Radio, aircon, and MFD removal

Post by plod »

Tried looking through the interior styling section, the knowledge base, and tried search function.

I want to remove the radio, the aircon switches and the section above containing the MFD to do some painting.
So can anyone give me any pointers before I attempt to take them out please?

I stripped the centre console on my D9 Coupe.
Apart from thh top end where the screws are hidden behind the switches, it's mostly the same:

It's easy enough to do. The most difficult part is taking the radio to bits if you're planning on painting the standard one.

Something like this?

I actually read your guide the other day, but wondered whether it was D9 specific

well, the head unit and AC controls are held on the same way.
The screws for the top section (which is the first step to take) are hidden behind the little blanking plate on the left with the LED poking through it and behind the MFD itself which just pops out with some encouragement.

Got the top part out, but bbq skewers in short supply round here at mo so will be hunting round for something else

Didn't think about it till earlier, and we actually work for a company who specialise in painting plastic parts.
Going to have a word with them and see if they are painting anything else silver in the next week or so, if they can pop them in at the same time, especially as it will be baked in the oven.

Can the radio be operated without the front on it?
Got the MFD, the hazard button, and rear screen button just hanging out the aperture, so still can be used.

Yes and no for the radio as all the buttons are mounted on the front panel. Should still work if you can press the microswitches or use the steering column control stick.

Would imagine i'll be without the front for a day or so, so would be nice to still be able to listen to it

Result!

Had a word with the company we deliver for occassionally, and they said they'd paint my interiors parts.
Just got to wait for the bits to turn up from Wilko, and finish getting radio and aircon controls out.

Should be very good, as they have loads of experience painting automotive parts.

Got them out now - stereo was fun as I know I can be a bit heavy handed and was worried about breaking it.
Also the bit that looks like a button, but is just a blank with the power light is moulded in, needed the ends breaking off them to allow it to come out - guess i'll have to glue it back in.

Only problem I have now, that had the aircon controls and radio still in situ at first whilst dismantling, and a strip of rubber fell onto the centre console and i'm unsure of where it came from?
It's probably 2-3mm in diameter and about 4" long
