Hi all,
Looking at my 293000 mile 2.0 HDI 1999 406, the engine still pulls like a train

but the paint work is looking somewhat perished

.... clear lacquer is pealing and got a bit of rust.
I was thinking about spraying painting (with rattel cans

) my car MAT black .... Has anyone else done this?? If so got any pics and how do you think you go about changing the colour on my V5??
Cheers
Matt

Holy sh*t that's real lunar mileage!

And they say French cars are unreliable.
I wouldn't recommend using rattle cans. It's cheap - but unless you're REALLY good at applying a very even amount of paint over the whole car, it'll look crap.
Full-body resprays are for professional bodyshops. Be prepared to pay a lot of money for the work.
Incidentally, with that level of mileage - when were the timing belt and water pump last changed?

Yeah man the mileage is a bit stellar really, but it’s still a great car underneath the paint

!! Lol
I have a receipt for it having a cam belt and water pump at about 240k so will have to be looking at one soon as I think it’s about every 60k. Belts still looks pretty new, still has the writing!! Pmsl.
Well I think that the rattle can idea is better than it looks now and I haven’t got the money for a full re-spray .... dose anyone have the money for a full re-spray these days

!! lol

A lad I know did his Focus matt black with rattle cans, the rat look etc, and tbh I thought it looked ok, his prep work lacked a bit in places so if you prep the car well enough I would of thought it would'nt look to bad
The kids in his street thought so aswell, as they turned the car into a 4 wheeled chalkboard

If you have the lacquer peeling on individual panels like doors, wings, boot, or bonnet, these can all (potentially) be reasonably easily swapped out for ones you might find in a scrappy. If its the rear quarter-panels or roof, then it's a bit more difficult
There's no doubt you've got a good car there; it's a shame the paint is letting it down. Truth be told, with mileage like that, you'll probably find it cheaper to replace the car than to sort the paint out properly
You could always befriend someone who works in a paint shop and see if he/she'll give you a sizeable discount.
Seriously, that's (very respectably) high mileage, and I need to throw the question out there to the other group members: does anyone else's car have more miles on their clock than this?

There is a cheap Alternative to spraying a car ,
but you need a compressor and somewhere you can use it where people carnt complain /moan,
you can spray a car for under £20
rattle cans wouid cost you most probs £80 £90 to spray a whole car and itd take hours

as lozz said a compressor can be used to spray paint.
They are good i did an old transit, but dust becomes the issue with paint, thats why you need to take it to a bodyshop them ovens they have do not contain dust (or at least they shouldnt) because dust is the enemy of a good paint finish.

Depends on what paints used.
Metalics need a spray booth preflably,
if the car is rough looking there is cheap methods to tidy up amotor,

Surely if you're painting the car matt black, then dust ain't that big an issue as surely it won't show up like a gloss finish
I ain't a fan of the matt finish, except on a 50's car, but hey, if that's what you want, then go for it
If you are going to do it with piss cans, then go to a paint supplier, and get them to supply them
Should work out like cheaper than Halfrauds

Thanks for the comments guys,
I will post some pics up soon when I get a chance of the affected areas but to list a few
• Bonnet
• Front wings
• A pillar
• Around petrol cap
I’d love to get a compressor so I can do it properly, I love this car it’s just the paint that makes it look tatty but I can’t justify a respray in a body shop

.
Is there any other options apart from getting a compressor and rattle cans

?

Yeah theres a cheap option that doesnt require a compressor but you need to take your time doing it
theres also some videos on this method on you tube,
what you need is :
a couple of Gloss/radiator rollers not the fluffy ones the smooth ones ,
a couple of trays,
sandpaper.
£2 worth of petrol
1 tin of gloss (chosen colour) that can be thined down,
thin the paint down with petrol and roll it on ,
the petrol is used to thin the paint and makes the paint dry quickly,
sounds stupid but it works and it leaves no marks ,
you can also just use meths instead of petrol,
it doent look to bad done this way and itl cost under £20
