Estate Boot Seats

Post by MrChips »

Hi,

I have my eye on some seats selling soon, I have been in touch with the seller to confirm some details. The seats wont actually be coming with the belts... What sort will I need to ensure the seats and belts are fitted properly if I win the bid??

I have not seen these fitted in the flesh nor do I know anyone with a seven seater to look at.

Advice and Photo's would be greatly appreciated.

Regards David

I don't know anything about the belts but bear in mind I think you will need a spacesaver spare as the full size won't fit in anymore.I might be wrong but I thought I heard that somewhere.

Hi, recently did my 7 seat conversion about 3 months ago. You really need the following items;
Seats....
Pair of seatbelts ( these are different to standard rear belts, different mounting and have the dangly thing so can be hung from C pillar.
Pair of rear sides by parcel shelf ( extra slot needed for extra belt )
Pair of C pillar covers ( hole drilled for mounting seatbelt, although I just put a hole in original ones )
Pair of boot sides ( where the light is as there is a hole for seatbelt mounting )
Tail gate cover ( needs an emergency exit latch, so 7 seaters have a slot in them for the latch and a slot on top for the blind )
Space saver ( sadly only in 15" )
Carpet to cover spare wheel and create mini footwell ( I didn't get one so used old boot carpet instead )
Thicker boot carpet that goes around the seats when down, as they stick up an inch or so so need to fill the space.
The clips that hold spare wheel cover in place will need to be removed as the seats have built in tie hooks.

Not just the seats really...

I managed to get a look at some photo's, I'm thinking it's bugger job than I'd first envisaged. I'm gonna put this one way back on the back burner... The wife is relieved :)

I forget now, but what did we decide was the legality of doing this conversion yourself?

No problem doing it yourself, just change the V5 to ' 7 seats ' in the check box to let DVLA know.
Mine is due MOT in a few weeks, lets see what MOT man has to say about the legality.

Mr Chips, I did my conversion during my lunch hour at work, took 2 days mind. Just keep your eye out for either a complete donor car being broken or just the bits needed. They don't come up very often thats why I took the plunge.

Sounds good to me. Did you end up paying any more insurance when you told them?

Exactly! The the amount of use I'll actually get it just isn't worth the time, effort and cost.

But all comments appreciated... cheers guys :)

Be careful of the insurance thing, you might have given them an excuse not to pay out if you have a shunt. Isn't there some thing about undeclared modifications? Mine has a line similar to ''is the car different in any way to how it left the factory?''
I'd just hate you to have some horrible crash and they use it as a way to weasel out of paying.

No worries Busman, I will get the car MOTed and if he his happy with the security and fixings of the extra seats, then I will declare them.
If it turns out they won't pass the MOT, I'll have to remove them For a day anyway...
