Not me, I'm not going to stoop to the depths of poor knob jokes, not my thing.

A flange, however.... 8)

No matter how hard I pull my knob it won't come off, I bought the replacement leather but it won't budge any pointers.

Twist slightly and pull. It will come off. It has lugs holding it in place

Just received my leather boot but I am not happy it seems too short looking at your picture of it tucked in under the top cap see here http://www.flickr.com/photos/62317743@N05/10775931536/

You seem to have an old style knob from a pre-2002 car. It will only fit the gear knobs like the one I have in my pictures - i.e. the ones that had leather to start with. It does say on the eBay ad that it will not fit those without the leather there in the first place.

Oh OK. In that case, it should fit. It did look short on mine as well but it only needs a tiny bit of overhang to tuck the edges in.

I have just tried again and if I pull it up enough to fold into the top it is them 5mm from the bottom, I think I may have something for another car.

Very weird. Can you take a picture of the knob without the leather bit on it?

Yours is clearly different. Mine doesn't have the neck at the bottom - it's just a circular ball.

All things come to he who waits......

arthritis,
failing eyesight,
deafness,
lower back pain,
short term memory loss,
- in fact lots of stuff you'd rather not contemplate.

Sometimes, though - it's not bad news.

As I'm too tight-fisted to shell out £31+ for a new knob, this was an unexpected result.

Many thanks to jasper5, who found a 6-speed knob with slightly tired leather that was probably destined for the Pug dealer's bin and diverted it to a good home. :cheesy:

Now, an intelligent person would do some research, (i.e. seek out the coupe club Howto CJ mentioned at the top of this thread), then you would know you can simply prise the inset with the gearchange diagram out of the top of the knob, so no need to take it off the car (or risk damage to your dentures in the process).

I, on the other hand, leapt into action and swapped the knobs over first.....

The following morning, I decided I wanted to replace the leather - it's only £5.99 on e-Bay. Having no idea how to remove it, I finally engaged the brain and looked it up.

Once separated they look like this....

So, after several hours I achieved the result in the top pic, while someone with a brain could probably have done it in one hit, in about 10 minutes.

Anyway, I knew you'd all be really excited to hear about this, just like these two.
