Here's the next problem .... the rear view mirror (auto dimming type) on the D9 seems to vibrate at most engine speeds, turning all behind me into an incoherent blur!
Has anyone encountered this before and is there a known fix for it ..... apart from switching the engine off! Is there perhaps some way of tightening it up?

Normally only happens during harsh acceleration with a remapped 2.2 HDi, (or so I've been told).

Suspect you need to check your engine mountings.

Failed bottom engine mount is the main suspect for this.

Thanks chaps, for the insight. Diesels are a complete unknown for me - this is the first. All I can really make comparison to is when it is idle it sounds like a black cab! Drives well enough though.

So, the bottom engine mountings - is that a costly affair involving major work?

Top one is quite easy, the gearbox one is abbot more difficult but quite straightforward and the third one requires to remove the driveshaft as it goes through the bracket and it also needs pressing I believe.

Cheers Ben. Sounds like that would be fairly pricey to have done - not got much of a budget at the moment.

Maybe the answer is to just remove the mirror!

Pah, what do you want to look behind you for anyway? Stop living in the past! I tend to forget the rear view and just use the mirrors, 20 years driving vans will do that to you.

Putting self adhesive wheel weights onto the back can cure this, cheaply to

But I have also now done all my engine stabilisers.

Anyone care to guess why mirrors moved onto the glass?

They don't seem to fall off as much as they used to anyway.

They've moved more into the driver's line of view without the need for a big stick hanging down from the headlining and subsequent vibes? To make windscreen fitting more expensive? I give up

I guess it moved as windscreens became more 'swept back' then if it was on the headlining it would be too far back....

Thanks for the tip, DDD! I may well try that. And can report I am now, after a rather uncertain start, beginning to enjoy driving her. Totally different creature from the 2.0l petrol 406 I have just retired after 13 years. That, for me was a great car and was sorry to see her go on Saturday but, life goes on! This one is, well, different but enjoyable too. Certainly more economical: filled it up when I got it and zeroed the trip. Looking at nearly 650miles+ so far on a single tank, maybe even 700 and that is without attempting to be economical with it this first week. The old car would average under 400miles/tank (both same size, 70litre) and I used to think that was good!

The mirror vibration only occurs at certain frequencies and isn't 'violent' as such - more of a 'buzzing' than a shuddering. I wouldn't think (or rather, would hope not) that the engine mountings are loose, no evidence of engine 'judder' but, of course, I listen respectfully to the suggestions offered here.
When it happens, it does cause everything to go out of focus though, which is a bit distracting. (I confess, I do still use the thing occasionally! )

I solved this vibration problem installing the Peugeot 607 rear mirror, is more harder and more reliable than 406's versions.
