How to pull this plug apart??

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

How to pull this plug apart??

Post by plod »

Picked up a wiper stalk with trip function on it, and at same time seller had a radio control stalk for sale so bought that as well.

Fitted the stalks earlier but the radio control wasn't working.

I took back apart, and noticed it was different.

Mine had going from left to right on the stalk - white going to plug no4; red going to plug no2; and a blue going to plug no1

The new one was marked thus - from left to right - blue going to plug no1; red going to plug no3; and white going to plug no1

Thus to make it work I need to move the blue from 1 to no 4(equivalent of white on original) red to no 2, and the white to no 1 ( equivalent of blue on original)

The plug with this no.s on is brown with a red clip built into it. Now I figure with red clip closed is to lock the connectors into position, but ive tried pulling the red clip out as much as I can, and it goes to 2 positions. I've tried tugging on the clips to pull them out of the plug, but i'm uber cautious as don't want to break it.

Does anyone know which position to get the red clip into to allow the connectors to come out, and thus enable me to refit them into positions that work on my car?

2 pics of the clip; one with it closed and one with it in one of the 2 positions the clip goes to.

I know this is a stupid question, but have you looked inside the plug to see how the red bit looks when released all the way? Is it really clear of all obstructions?
If it appears to be I would warm up the connectors with a hair dryer and spray WD 40 all over the connectors, then gently attempt to pull the connectors apart.
I used this method when I stripped my old Sky HD box to pull out the power supply unit, there is a stubborn computer ribbon type connector on the mother board, it popped off easy afterwards.

The connectors on these daft cars don't usually dismantle, I'd think this red clip thing is to lock the connector in place.

I looked inside, and to me, it seems that fully in, it locks the connectors on one side, it would appear middle is to release, and then next step appears to lock the connector on the other side, but can't see the point in this latter option?

I've tried the 2 different options and the connectors don't want to move. If I knew the definitive answer I could keep pulling until they come out.

I could just cut the wires and solder and shrink wrap the old plug onto the new stalk wiring, but would rather try and have it the other way if I can.

I'll try the wd and hairdryer method though bud

Bugger, looks like it's the soldering option as when trying to get the pliers into the plug, i've broken a wire :(
