1999 1.8 D9. Climate control.
My heater blower has been playing up of late and finally this week stopped working. I noticed a lot of threads on this and so took the blower off, cleaned it up and to see if there was a short at the blower end. Well there wasn't. I also measured 12.21 volts coming out of the connector, but noticed the voltage didn't change when I adjusted the fan speed.
I then took the radio and MFD out to see if there was any problem with the connectors there and couldn't see anything wrong.
So, stumped, I checked the fuses and all are ok.
Shortly after, on a short drive, I remembered a thread on here about a wire going around the ignition barrel, and so waggled the key a bit. As soon as I did that, the blower lurched into life before stopping again about a second later. I waggled somemore but couldn't get it to do anything.
I checked the fuses again and try at o look at the wires under the steering column, but not sure where to look or what the problem is.
Any ideas? If I can get the steering cowling off, what am I looking for?
Thanks.

It's the wires going into the ignition switch , take the cowel off and wiggle the
wires,it will probably kick in again like mine did . I managed to tape in aposition where it
carried on working but in the end had to change ignition barrel £130 ish ...

Hi,
I think the problem is in the switch, it was on my 404 estate, and my xantia, and my local sparky claims it to be a common problem. However, it can be cured at a cost of around £4!This is how. Locate both the feed to the ign switch and the failed circuit on the output side. Cut the failed side cable on the switch side of the connector( this is to avoid altering the actual car wiring).Obtain a 40 amp relay and mount it securely. Spur a lead from the feed , and connect to the load terminals of this relay.Link the remaining load termimal to the severed (car side but before the connector) of the dead ign switch circuit.Spur a link from an ign controlled supply to the" control" relay termimals, and link the remaining "control" terminal to a good earth. Now when ever you have the ign on, the relay will energise and supply all the circuits originaly fed by the failed section of your ign switch.

Awesome! Thanks for the replies. I'll have a play tomorrow and see what's what.
