406 HDI lost all electrics

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

406 HDI lost all electrics

Post by Scotte »

Just wanted to find out if anyone had experienced this same problem:

my 406 20 HDI 110 is a 2002 model and has done 78k.~I have owned the car since 30k and never had any issues until! - a few weeks ago I was on my way to the petrol station when I noticed the radio had switched off. I then realised that it wasnt just the radio but all the electrics had stopped working - that included everything - speedo clocks windows lights - anything electrical etc - but the headlights stuck on.

The car continued to run so I got it home and called the AA - he did some checks and suggested that a specialist auto electrician to come out to it.

I followed his instructions and got a local and well known mobile man to come out.. he did some checks and diagnosed as a faulty BSI unit - he showed me the old one which had corrosion on the circuit board and plug etc.

We ordered the part and had it fitted and programmed but the car still doesnt have its electrics - he explained that the BSI was definitely faulty which I can only take his word for this.

He said that the fault was with the Can Bus system and needs to go to Peugeot for further diagnosis.

I am not expecting anyone to diagnose on here but thought it might help if someone had experienced similar. I dont know whether to take it to another speicalist or bite the bullet and take to a dealer.

Any info appreciated

AFAIK a new BSI has to be configured to the car & I think you only get one go, then it isn't a new one & can't be done. :?

Read somwhere else it can be 're-virginised', but god knows how you do that.

(Probably requires BBA Remanufacturing, PP2000, someone who knows wot they're doing & the script writing team from Dallas).
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Carpet dampness extravaganza - viewtopic.php?f=10&t=12118

If there's dampness in the BSI then it'll be elsewhere too. Just a thought, is your air con bust?

Water could be entering the cabin via a poorly-fitted scuttle plate at the bulkhead/windscreen from a rushed pollen filter change? any water through here would trickle down into the footwell ducting and soak into the carpet.

As shown in the thread steve linked to above the 406 can usually be fixed by a really easy repair, it's just finding the damn thing. Hopefully this stuff will help you narrow-down the problem.

Thanks for the replies. The car had a sunroof leak last year. This was repaired but I expect the damp has got into the plug as shown in the thread. I will get the garage to check tomor and let you know how it goes.
