Low brake fluid warning

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Low brake fluid warning

Post by raccoon »

Good morning everyone. On my 406 I keep getting a "low brake fluid level" warning text on the radio display, (when it was working that is) when the handbrake is applied. I know the fluid is ok so I think it must be the switch on the handbrake lever. Is it easy to disconect the wires so I dont get it all the time. Or is it possibly just the switch out of position a bit. Any info greatly recieved and a pint if I see you down the pub. Cheers everyone.

The handbrake switches are famous for getting a bit ropey in their old age, the standard cure seems to be to wang the lever up and down a few dozen times. Just make sure no-one's watching

Mine's a pint of scotch :P

Be warned though, that this doesn't always work. It didn't with mine so I ended up changing the part. It costs less than £5 from Peugeot & is worth doing. Takes less than 1hr, but is a bit fiddly. When you see the old switch compared to the new one you soon see why it causes a problem.

The switch is at the very back of the centre console under the rear of the handbrake & when the handbrake is released, a little plunger rises. Whenthe handbrake is applied, it should push the plunger down, but it quite often can miss the plunger altogether as the original item has a very small surface area. The modified item has a large flat piece on top to prevent this from happening.

Here is the How To Guide that I used to do mine:

This happened to me ….so I changed the switch. Then after a year it went again..so I pulled the plug off the switch ...no more fluid warning...and I can tell if the handbrake is on..the car doesn’t move !
