aaah its good to be back on here. I havent had a 406 for a while hence the lack of posts from me. il start off with a tricky one...
Ive just bought a (98 d8 1.9td glx with aircon) My question is does anyone know what size of alternator this uses?
Seconly I have a spare from a (96 d8 1.9td lx non aircon) non 100% sure of its condtion. & (95 1.9 td 306 no aircon no electric windows etc) working 100%
Would these do the job? or are they fitted differently/different amps?

Re: Range of alternators
Welcome back to the fold
On Service Bks 1.9 without air con are 80, 90 & 120, with they're 90 & 120
The 306 without air con or power steering are 70 & 80, with power steering are 70, 80 & 90 but there's a change in design in '95 and the earlier one looks kind of different. There's so many different part numbers I can't follow them but I think the 406 alternators look to be the same fitting and if the 306 one looks the same as your spare 406 then it should fit. Just the amperage to worry about - if your spares are 80 amp you might have troubles and if the 306 is a 70 don't even think about it...

Re: Range of alternators
Cheers Steve. a great help as always.
I was on service box already... all the different types confused me too. I was hoping it would narrow it down to one instead of 15 with the vin numbers of the 3 cars entered, That way I could tell what was what.
Im guessing with all the electrics minus the electric heated seats, its going to be atleast 90amp if not the 120amp. With this cold weather i may aswell just get it rufurbished rather than standing over the 306 removing it in the snow in the off chance it mite do the job. lol

Re: Range of alternators
Always worth fitting the biggest alternator possible, and I'd be on the lookout for a 120A one if I were you. I'm into my stereo though, so always have at least one amp in any of my cars which is why I always go for the biggest alternator and battery possible.

Re: Range of alternators
A bit of an update on this for anyone in the future. 306 alternator is a different fitting so thats no good. After a little more homework on service box and using the vin number I have come to the conclusion that the car was originally fitted with a 90amp. After removing the one thats on it I have discovered someone has fitted an 80amp, Probably tried this to cure the problem but it didnt work. (bolts easily removed) When I bought the car it had a new battery and worked perfectly until the 40min drive home in the dark, in a black car with slowly dimming lights and electronic failures as the miles went by. lol
When I tested with the multimeter it read....
Enigine off (after the drive home) - 12.4v
idle(lights+blower) - 12.4v decreasing by 0.1 every second
Next step, is to get the spare 406 one bench tested, then maybe refurbished if its 90amp. Or buy a new 90amp/120amp
