won't start - immobilser? d9 hdi110

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

won't start - immobilser? d9 hdi110

Post by dancutler »

looking for some help with my D9, it's a 2001 110hdi exec which has been 100% reliable up to this point.
I have searched for the answer but can't find anything to cure it.

Tuesday the alarm was going off, couldn't get it to stop so pulled the positive off the battery (which i now realise may not have been the best thing to do! ). it also gave me several warnings at the same time:
immobiliser fault
abs fault
airbag fault

I got it to calm down eventually, went back to it yesterday and it was totally flat, charged the battery overnight and today i have the 'key' dash light on, along with the engine management light, and the headlights - permanently. I also traced a permanent buzzing sound to the interior light/sunroof switch area, making me think there is someting not switching off properly and confusing the whole system.

it will turn over but won't fire, it wont lock or unlock with the remote. windows and sunroof don't work (everything else electrical does as far as i can tell).

i've checked all fuses, replaced key batteries and sync'ed the keys but it doesn't make any difference. i'll be pushing it down the road and calling the RAC tomorrow, just wondered if any of you kind folk had a bright idea.

cheers, dan

Check for signs of water ingress in the following areas:

1) the drivers' footwell carpeting
2) the rear light clusters
3) the spare wheel well in the boot
4) the fuse box below the steering wheel
5) the fuse box under the bonnet
6) the ECU box under the bonnet
7) the battery box

It sounds to me like there's an electrical short occurring; water ingress can cause this kind of thing. Also need to check in case there's a bad earth somewhere, but I don't know much about that.

take the battery lead off for 20 mins,
then reset the bsi, the instructions for that are on the forum ibelieve,

then see if it starts,
every thing may of just got confused when you took the lead off quick and with the alarm going off also couid of let the car think someone is trying to pinch it,

the reset may not work but its gotta be worth a try

Could be immobiliser receiver/transponder in the barrel, its a common problem according to RAC who came to look at mine.
He just wiggled the key in the ignition til the light went out.

sometimes if the key doesnt unlock the car wirelessly, which happens in mine i think due to a weak battery in the key i havent replaced in the key the alarm will go off if you open the door it seems inevitable, so quickly get the key in and start the car that shuts it up, or else i use the spare key which has a spare key and really should be promoted to main key but isnt as the peugeot lion on its a bit worn looking.

I had a look at the 'footwell connectors' link, felt inspired and went outside. I ripped up the carpet in the drivers footwell and found the connector plugs enjoying life submerged in a small lake.
They were so rusty that some came off in my hand.

All seems to be ok now, thanks for the advice!

another problem solved, them footwell connectors, thankfully i havent needed to look at them yet, but does the car need to leak to submerge them or is it just caused by wet feet getting into the car.

Helped someone over at the Coupe Club today who had exactly the same symptoms, and as it turns out, exactly the same cause. Bloody French electrics.

With the amount of snow we have had its no surprise the drivers footwell is wet...mine is soaking. I intend to dry it out this week weather permitting...I`ll let you know how it went.
